b/w plates, facs., bibl., glos., pict. wrps. The year is 1870; the unique dress of the street vendors that filled the marketplaces of Mexico was not missed by Antioco Cruces and Luis Campa, who as students at the Academia de San Carlos, had one of the 22 photographic studios that were located in the principal streets of Mexico. They developed a photographic collection of "tipos populares". The work of Cruces y Campa was representative of early photographic art. They worked in the "tarjeta de visita", with a camera that permitted 8 takes of 6x9 centimeters that became a plate of 21x26 centimeters. Cruces and Campa have become famous for their photographs of famous personages such as, Maximillan and Carlotta; Benito Juárez (which sold 20 thousand copies in 2 days after his death). Their efforts set the standard for quality photography in Mexico. In the 1876 Exposition in Philadelphia they won the first prize for quality of production. NOW OUT OF PRINT.
