In this book, Pablo Bustinduy persuasively argues that political universalism emerged from both the developments of Newtonian science and the formulation of the modern philosophy of the State. In the metaphysics…of an open, empty, abstract and absolute space, Bustinduy suggests, the universalist project of modern politics found its logical model and foundation. There, the anxiety of a dislocated world was overcome, and the ontology of modern physics found a specific political expression that, despite being besieged by multiple crises, still animates our political imagination. By offering a political reading of early modern philosophy of space, Space and Political Universalism in Early Modern Physics and Philosophy reveals the connections between the logical development of early modern science, the contemporary elaborations of the philosophy of the State, and the historical articulations of the Westphalian system, early capitalist social formations, and the European colonial project. In doing so, it offers a powerful reflection on how we might detach democracy from the 'perilous metaphysics' of infinite space that has engendered political violence and domination, positing space as an emptiness that prevents the closure of the political itself.

El capitalismo, explican, también se basa en la supuesta igualdad de lo que reúne, en el intercambio «libre» y «voluntario» de bienes y servicios, dinero y mercancías, tiempo y trabajo, y en la escenificación constante de la competencia entre partes que se relacionan en condiciones de una igualdad supuesta, abstracta, falaz. Esa es la continuidad entre el capitalismo como lógica de equivalencias y la democracia como mecanismo capaz de sublimar la diferencia social para repartir el poder, una y otra vez, de forma pacífica y simbólicamente efectiva. La democracia aparece así como la forma ideal del capitalismo, como el suplemento político que lo completa y refuerza, organizando la gestión y el aplacamiento de sus conflictos y diluyendo en la imagen del pueblo las desigualdades y la división política de los sujetos que supuestamente lo forman. Así funciona el argumento: un silogismo por el que la democracia se identifica con la esfera política, la política con la representación y la representación con la lógica capitalista de la separación entre política y economía, vida y trabajo, medios y fines, formas y contenidos. La democracia aparece entonces como el nombre propio de esa escisión fundamental, y significa a la vez un estado de cosas y el orden que las rige, una forma de gobierno y una lógica social.
