Soft cover. Zustand: As New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. First Trade Paperback Edition. INVALUABLE: INDISPENSABLE, ENTRALLING, AMBITIOUS: AS-NEW First Trade Paperback Edition (Orig. 1995) Fifth Printing (c. 2010): Volume 3 in the series "Weimar and Now: German Cultural Criticism" edited by Anton Kaes w/ Martin Jay & Edward Dimendberg * 6.48" x 9.74" x 1.86", 1.54 kg, xx+810 (830) pp * ABOUT THE BOOK: A laboratory for competing visions of modernity, the Weimar Republic (1918-1933) continues to haunt the imagination of the 20th century. Its political & cultural lessons retain uncanny relevance for all who seek to understand the tensions & possibilities of our age. "The Weimar Republic Sourcebook" represents the most comprehensive documentation of Weimar culture, history, & politics assembled in any language. It invites a wide community of readers to discover the richness & complexity of the turbulent years in Germany before Hitler's rise to power. Drawing from such primary sources as magazines, newspapers, manifestos, & official documents (many unknown even to specialists & most never before available in English), this book challenges the traditional boundaries between politics, culture, & social life. Its 30 chapters explore Germany's complex relationship to democracy, ideologies of "reactionary modernism," the rise of the "New Woman," Bauhaus architecture, the impact of mass media, the literary life, the tradition of cabaret & urban entertainment, & the situation of Jews, intellectuals, & workers before & during the emergence of fascism. While devoting much attention to the Republic's varied artistic & intellectual achievements (the Frankfurt School, political theater, 12-tone music, cultural criticism, photo-montage, & urban planning), the book is unique for its inclusion of many lesser-known materials on popular culture, consumerism, body culture, drugs, criminality, & sexuality; it also contains a timetable of major political events, an extensive bibliography, & capsule biographies. This will be a major resource & reference work for students & scholars in history; art; architecture; literature; social & political thought; & cultural, film, German, & women's studies. * HIGHEST PRAISE: "'The Weimar Republic Sourcebook' is an INVALUABLE resource for understanding one of the most important & resonant eras of the 20th century. SInce the Weimar debate has continued to repeat itself, albeit w/ less intellectual brilliance, this book is as much about the present as about the past. Here is the Weimar era in all its many-voiced & eloquent complexity: most of these texts, even those by the most famous names of the period, appear for the first time in English. This is an INDISPENSABLE, ENTRALLING, properly AMBITIOUS book." -Susan Sontag * ABOUT THE AUTHORS-EDITORS: ANTON KAES is Professor of German & Director of Film Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He is author most recently of "From Hitler to Heimat: The Return of History as Film" (1989). MARTIN JAY is Sidney Hellman Ehrman Professor of History at the University of California, Berkeley. His books include "Downcast Eyes: The Denigration of Vision in Twentieth-Century French Thought" (California, 1993). EDWARD DIMENBERG is Assistant Professor of German Studies, Film & Video Studies, & Architecture at the University of Michigan.…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Stated First Printing. The hardcover first printing is quite rare. I found only one other for sale. This book has had a number of printings. It's a large and heavy book. I am offering free shipping. The book will be sent in a box and securely packaged in bubble wrap. You can see it's covers in the photos. They are mainly quite clean. There are two small, light spots on the rear cover. The gilt (or silver, depending on how the light hits) lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The cover edges are in very nice shape. The cover corners have only speck-sized spots of rubbing. There's also a little spot of rubbing at both the front and rear sides of the spine, just off the top edge. The page edges look terrific, perfectly clean. The book is square and the spine straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The inside covers and end papers display an illustration of a multitude of Campbell's soup cans, asparagus, mushrooms, minestrone, etc. They are all in excellent condition (the inside covers and end papers that is), perfectly clean, no wear. That accurately describes the condition of all the pages. They are semi-glossy and exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any instances of soiling. I'm also not finding any instances of creasing. And there are no markings or attachments, and no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. As you would expect, there are a tremendous number of photographs, color photographs, quite interesting to look at and all in exceptional condition. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I have always had it in a fitted protective cover. I don't see any soiling. There is some very light toning. I don't see any tears. The flaps are in nice condition, very clean. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. I will warn ahead of having taken the photos that the protective cover will attract glare so you won't mistake it for something else. From the dust jacket: 'In Hungry Planet, the creative team behind the best-selling Material World books, Peter Menzel and Faith D'alusio, presents a photographic study of families from around the world, revealing what people eat during the course of one week. Each family's profile includes a detailed description of their weekly food purchases; photographs of the family at home, at the market, and in their community; and a portrait of the entire family surrounded by a week's worth of groceries. To assemble this remarkable comparison Menzel and D'alusio traveled to twenty-four countries and visited thirty families from Bhutan and Bosnia to Mexico and Mongolia.'. Peter Menzel (illustrator).…
