The most important early work of Australian natural history. It is one of the first and most beautiful of Australian color-plate books. White served as surgeon general to the settlement of New South Wales and sailed with the First Fleet. His account is the best of the early descriptions of the natural history of the colony. "White's journal is of key importance to any collection of Australiana and is essential to a collection of Foundation books." [Wantrup] Hill adds that "the long appendix is very important as it describes the natural history of the new colony; the first major work of this sort." The volume includes a lengthy list of subscribers containing some seven hundred names, mostly for the uncoloured issue, which speaks to the contemporary interest in the South Pacific in the wake of Cook's voyages. The present copy is the elusive deluxe hand-colored issue. The magnificent plates are largely after drawings by Sarah Stone and Frederick Nodder, based on the natural history specimens sent by White back to London. A prolific and highly accomplished painter of natural history subjects in London between 1777 and 1806, Stone worked for Sir Ashton Lever, documenting Lever's vast private collection of ornithological, zoological, and ethnographical specimens. Access to specimens collected by Cook's early voyages inspired Stone to create the most significant portfolio of paintings and published engravings of Australian birds, amply demonstrated by this volume. When the artist Thomas Watling, a convict, arrived in the colony in October 1792, he was assigned to White and over the next two years made numerous drawings of birds for him. It's possible White also was responsible for some of the original sketches for the engravings herein. White's journal also contains a description of the voyage from London, with long, detailed accounts of his sojourns at Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, and Norfolk Island. Abbey Travel, 605. See Fores' entry in the Oxford DNB. Almack's Assembly Rooms in King Street was the most fashionable venue for the dandies and belles of Regency London. The present item, deftly hand-coloured in pink, red, light and dark blue, and yellow, is 14 x 10.5 cm, in a grey border extending out to 16.5 x 13 cm. Within the head of the bord…er is 'Illustrations to Almack's, Page 16.', and within the foot is the caption, with Fores' publication details at bottom-right. There are other illustrations by Fores to the novel, and it may be that they were issued as a series. In any case the present item is extremely scarce, no other copy having been located, at the British Library, British Museum Prints and Drawings, or elsewhere. The present copy is in good condition, but there is discoloration and wear to the grey border. 'Almack's / A Novel' had been published anonymously in London in 1826 by 'Saunders and Otley, Public Library, Conduit Street.' It appears to be the only novel that Marianne Spencer Hudson published. The passage referred to in the caption appears on p.21 of that edition: ' "There goes a flower of a youth," said Isaac to his ancient spouse; "he'll make a figure wherever he goes, my life on it, and my blessing go with him." / "Amen," said old Molly, wiping her eyes upon her blue checked apron. / Colonel Montague had indeed been the flower of his family, [.]'. The scene, as depicted by Fores, is of a young gentleman (Colonel Montagu), dressed in the height of fashion with hat in hand, looking at an armorial shield on the wall of a castle or hall, while he is stared at by a bespectackled rake of an old woman (Molly), hands raised, while her short and plump knock-kneed husband gestures to the young man while looking up at his wife with flushed cheeks. The overall effect is deliberately absurd. See image.

A rare early view of the Cohoes Falls on the Mohawk River in New York, by Thomas Davies one of the first surveyors to draw North America and Canada. Thomas Davies was born in England, but he spent the majority of his life in service in America and Canada. His disti…nguished career saw him through two wars and many uncharted lands, and his topographical drawings of Northern America and Canada remain some of the most important visual records of these territories. In 1755 he entered the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich as a gentleman cadet in the artillery. At this time topographical drawing was part of every officer's training, and under the tutelage of Gamaliel Massiot, Davies learnt to master the art. Davies differed from many of his contemporaries in that; drawing became for him not merely a necessary military skill, but an art to be pursued. During his military career Davies made hundreds of topographical sketches that are not only a record of an uncharted land, but true works of art. He first came to the Americas during the French and Indian wars under General Amherst's command. He participated in the assault on Louisbourg, the expedition against Ticonderoga, and the capture of Montreal. During the Revolutionary War, Davies was stationed in New York and participated in many of the skirmishes in the surrounding areas. Throughout his dedicated career Davies could always be seen with a pencil in his hand, on every expedition he explored the surrounding territories and recorded their mysteries in simple yet compelling drawings. This early print, published in 1768, after Davies' drawing is an important piece of American and Canadian history and it allows us a glimpse at a forgotten land long changed by the passage of time. Pen-and-ink with grey and light green wash, on two joined sheets of laid paper, with an unlettered cartouche in the upper right corner in yellow wash, a compass rose additionally decorated in green, red, and yellow, period ink inscription on verso: "Kennebec River by Capt. Small." Provenance: Sir Francis Bernard, Colonial Govern…or of Massachusetts (1712-1779); by descent to Robert Spencer Bernard, Nether Winchendon House, Buckinghamshire, England. The earliest known survey of the upper Kennebec River, here in manuscript. In November 1969, noted historian of cartography William P. Cumming discovered in the family home of Sir Francis Bernard, "a collection of maps that, in purpose and type, differed so markedly from the more usual military, coastal, and general colonial maps of the time that it stands out in both interest and importance." [Cumming] The present manuscript map, done on a scale of approximately 4 1/2 miles to the inch, shows much of the length of the Kennebec, from its mouth to a point approximately 100 miles north of Fort Western, with its various tributaries and islands depicted. At the bottom of the map, the coast of Maine is shown in much detail, depicting the numerous small islands and inlets from Penobscot Bay in the north to Cape Elizabeth in the south. Numerous forts along the coast are shown, including George's Fort, Brunswick Fort, and Pemmaquid Fort; a church is depicted at the mouth of Royall's River near North Yarmouth. West of the Kennebec, a portion of the "Sagadehock" or "Amorescoggin" River is shown. Along the lower Kennebec, Fort Francfort, Fort Western, and Fort Halifax are identified. Toponyms north of Fort Halifax include "Norridge Walk" and "An Indian Carrying Place" (i.e. portage route) which is drawn via hachured line. Bernard became the Colonial Governor of Massachusetts in late 1759, shortly after British troops were victorious in the Battle of Quebec. That decisive French and Indian War victory opened a vast region for renewed English settlement and trade, thus necessitating the need for more accurate surveys of the roads and inland waterways. The present manuscript map was surveyed and drawn by the talented military mapmaker Francis Miller in 1765 for Bernard, the details of which are recounted by Bernard in a 1766 letter to Lord Barrington: "I am desired to certify to your Lordship, that at the beginning of the Year 1764 Genl Gage at my Request, gave Leave to Ensign Francis Miller of the 45th regiment, then stationed in Newfoundland to come to Boston to assist me in some Works of Public Surveying, which I had undertaken in pursuance of resolutions of the general Assembly and partly by Orders from England. Mr Miller being then at an outpost and not easily relieved did not arrive at Boston till Nov in that Year, when the Season for actual Surveying was over. He was employed that Winter and Spring following in protracting the Surveys made that Summer, among which was a compleat Route from Fort Pownal on the River Penobscot to Quebec [i.e. Chadwick's surveys], and some other curious explorations of the Eastern parts of New England hitherto unknown to Englishmen: of which, elegant Maps drawn by Mr. Miller have been transmitted to the Board of Trade." [Bernard to Barrington, 11 January 1766, quoted in The Barrington-Bernard Correspondence, p. 103, emphasis added.] The present map based on the surveys of little known Maine surveyor John Small would appear to have been among these "curious explorations." Small (c.1722-1761), learned surveying from his father Samuel Small of Scarborough, Maine, and actively engaged surveying in that region from a young age. In 1745, he was commissioned in the Army, serving at the first expedition against Louisburg and again in 1757-58 in Upstate New York, including action at Ticonderoga. In 1758-59, he served as a surveyor on Pownall's Expedition to the Penobscot River and the construction of Fort Pownall, and was commissioned as captain in 1759 for service in A.

Bound in contemporary half roan, boards covered with marbled paper. A few plates with a marginal faint waterstain, printed on heavy paper. Still a good copy. The album consists of an engraved fron…tispiece ; (1 title) , pl. 2, (3), 4, 5, 6, (7), (8), 9, 10, (11), 12, (13), (14),(15), 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, (unnumbered - added plate), (22), (unnumbered - added double page plate), 16 (sic-second plate with nr. 16). This last plate contains the table of the first 17 plates. All these 17 plates deal with the ''Querelle Parlementaire'' which was one of the most important political conflicts during the reign of Louis XV. The parlement of Paris , under Jansenist influence, opposed the Roman Catholic Church. The engraver Godonnesche, once official draughtsman of the king's Royal Coin-and Medal Collection, lost his position probably because he exceded the royal publication rules for his own work. He sided with the Parliament and made apparently good money in designing and printing these 17 plates which were in a way the continuation on paper of the art of the commemorative medal. The remaining plates (not mentioned in the table-plate which counts only 17 plates) are of a vehement anti-jesuit nature. They preclude the suppression of the Jesuit order in France (1764). This collection of medal engravings played an important role in influencing public opinion in these two important political struggles. A collection of these plates is very rare, only 4 entries in OCLC .

Sul classicista "Il Poligrafo" criticò Foscolo e ne nacque un'aspra polemica. Po a Napoli, poi a Firenze col Vieusseux, ecc. Luigi DE POTTER visse a lungo in Italia; nel 1824, data delle 15 vivaci lettere (dal 1° febbraio all'autunno) qui pubblicate, trovò al Lampredi un posto di precettore in Belgio. Era in corrispondenza col Vieusseux. Nel 1825 pubblicò una biografia del contemporaneo Scipione De Ricci vescovo ginasenista di Pistoia (1825). Raro. Censito come estratto alla sola Biblioteca Pasquale Albino di Campobasso.

To exempt the militia from turning out in July, Aug. & Sept. 1p December 1796." Old fold lines, but very good.
