Nepos was a Roman biographer whose original work has survived in one complete copy. This edition is found only in the Huntington and o…ne other library. Latin text with English translation. Nepos' De viris illustribus consisted of parallel lives of distinguished Romans and foreigners, in sixteen books. It originally included "descriptions of foreign and Roman kings, generals, lawyers, orators, poets, historians, and philosophers". Pliny the Elder notes he died in the reign of Augustus. Bound in full calf, raised bands, red morocco spine label gilt, other compartments decorated in gilt, From the library of Alexander Fraser, an army officer, militia officer, office holder, justice of the peace, politician, and farmer. He accompanied the staff to Quebec in September 1805 and shortly thereafter assumed command of the regiment's recruiting department at Montreal. Four years later he became quartermaster and served in that capacity throughout the War of 1812. A very nice copy, internally clean and bright. Provenance: Contemporary marginal annotations to Casaubon's commentary, and a leaf of manuscript notes at the end. First edition of Isaac Casaubon's famous edition of Strabo's "Geography", one of the earliest and most important scientific treatises of historical geography, containing the FIRST APPEARANCE OF MERCATOR'S CELEBRATED AND ONLY AVAILABLE WORLD MAP "Orbis Terrae Compendiosa Descriptio" Geneva 1587. This variant without text on the verso and with Latin text in the bottom margin. "Gerard Mercator's great world map of 1569 was condensed into double hemispherical form by his son Rumold. The engraving is a model of clarity and neatness, with typical cursive flourishes to the lettering of the sea names." (Shirley).
