Joseph Lartigue and the Theory of Winds: Sammelband of 8 Rare Works with Several Folding MapsA fascinating 19th-century bound sammelband of Joseph Lartigue s meteorological and nautical writings, assembled as a working reference on global wind circulation, storm behavior, and practical navigation. The volume brings together nine discrete Lartigue treatises and offprints (1840 to circa 1870s), including one of his key works Exposition du System des Ventes (1840), and includes important maps. Lartigue's work focuses on the syst me des vents, the mechanics of air movement at the Earth s surface and in the upper atmosphere, and the laws governing hurricanes and tempests, subjects of urgent importance in an era when mariners increasingly sought to use prevailing winds and avoid the predictable quadrants of tropical storms. Several pieces herein narrow from the planetary to the regional, including focused notes on the mistral and on the origins and feeding of the trade wind (aliz ) currents, while others are overtly polemical or evidentiary, most notably Lartigue s remarks on the data behind competing wind theories, including direct engagement with M. F. Maury s influential circulation model. The compilation is especially strong in cartographic content, containing a total of six folding lithographed maps across the Lartigue items, plus a folding plate that is partially colored and a folding table. Anchoring the whole is a rare, large format world chart, Carte Hydrographique des Parties Connues de la Terre (C. L. Gressier, Mercator projection), first issued by the D p t de la Marine in 1835 and here in an 1841 Annales maritimes et coloniales issue, with wind currents rendered by printed red arrows, a vivid, practical visualization of global air and sea routes as understood by French hydrographic science. In short, the volume represents an extensive compilation of one man's work in pairing theory, observation, controversy, and maps, all aimed at turning atmospheric knowledge into safer and faster passages at sea.The titles contained herein are as follows:Exposition du System des Ventes. Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1840. 107 pages plus 2 folding maps. Half title.Carte Hydrographique des Parties Connues de la Terre. Dress e sur la Projection de Mercator par C. L. Gressier. 1835 (in upper right margin beyond the neat line: Annales Maritimes et Coloniales: 1841. IIeme Partie; Tome 1er.) Wind currents shown with printed red arrows. With second map of same title, with different set of red arrows. Rare world charts first released by the D p t de la Marine in 1835 and prepared by C. L. Gressier, here present in an 1841 issues.Exposition du System des Ventes, ou Traite du Mouvement de l'air a la Surface du Globe et dans les Regions Elevees de l'Atmosphere. Paris: Librairie Hydrographique de Robiquet, 1855. 2nd. edition. 80 pages plus 2 folding maps: very rare pair of maps of the world showing the system of wind currents developed by Lartigue.
