This is a 1953 All-Year Club of Southern California pictorial tourist map.…Coverage extends from Topaz Lake south to the U.S. - Mexico border and from the Pacific Ocean to the California - Nevada border. Pictorial vignettes add charm. Tourists are illustrated sunbathing, fishing, surfing, hiking, and rock climbing, while a rancher, a covered wagon, and a miner reference the region's history. Grapes, oranges, giant sequoias, and cacti highlight the breadth of California's flora. Block texts introduce the region's eight counties, recount history, and highlight places of interest. A yellow box in the upper right includes the All-year Club's pitch that weather in southern California is ideal year-round. The All-Year Club of Southern California By the 1910s, Southern California was already a winter destination, a haven for easterners keen to escape New England winters. By the early 1920s, businessmen realized tourism need not be seasonal; Southern California's 'amazing' weather could draw visitors year-round. In 1921, a group of nineteen Southern California businessmen, led by Harry Chandler (publisher of the Los Angeles Times ), created the All-Year Club of Southern California as a spin-off of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. The club lobbied the county Board of Supervisors for funding to sell southern California as a summer resort. The push began in Texas, Arizona, and Oklahoma, where residents would see L.A.'s ninety degrees days with low humidity as relief from the sweltering Midwestern summer. That year, a single large resort reported a daily increase of 100 visitors. Likewise, the Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, and Union Pacific railroads reported record ticket sales during the summer of 1921. These early successes were proof of concept for the All-Year Club, and so it expanded promotion. Numbers continued to rise, as did the Club's budget, and by 1926 the All-Year Club was spending $450,000 on advertising and promotional material. However, not everything was positive. Even though SoCal was booming, ads only wanted tourists, not job-seekers. The ads stated categorically that tourists were welcome, but job-seekers were not, since they would not be able to find work. Nonetheless, the hopeful unemployed came, leading to an ongoing population boom. The All-Year Club of Southern California operated under that name until 1968, when it became the Greater Los Angeles Visitors and Convention Bureau, which later merged with the Southern California Visitors Council. Until 2012, the organization had been known as LA Inc., and today it is the Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board. This is a c. 1950 George Mathis pictorial map of Nevada City, California. Formerly a Gold Rush boom town, the Nevada City of today is a magnet for outdoor…enthusiasts. A Closer Look The map is centered on Nevada City. The region's outdoor recreation camps are prominently labeled, including two Girl Scout camps. Rivers, lakes, and creeks appear a bright blue, underscoring the abundant fishing opportunities. Lake Tahoe appears in the upper right corner. Fishermen appear alongside hunters (one of whom is being chased by a bear), golfers, and vacationers. References to the area's mining past appear in the form of a mining cart and prospector along the bottom edge, several abandoned mining shafts, and a runaway stagecoach on the right. Advertisements for local businesses frame the map on the left side and bottom. Publication History and Census This map was drawn by George Mathis and published by the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce c. 1950. It is dated based on Mathis's signature along the right border, which states that he lives in Nevada City. Mathis did not move to Nevada City until 1948, making 1950 the earliest likely publication date. We note a single example cataloged in OCLC, located at the California Historical Society. A distinctive work of mid-century Californiana and Americana, this large-format map was issued in 1954 by the Automobile Club of Southern California in its publication Westways . Displaying the entire Golden S…tate, it locates federal and state park lands, along with designated areas for fishing, hunting, skiing, and boating. A Closer Look The state of California is depicted in brilliant color, with national parks, forests, monuments, and recreation areas colored light green, dark green, or orange, highlighting their large share of California's total land. These sites, in addition to state parks, recreation areas, and areas set aside for skiing, hunting, boating, and fishing, more than 300 sites in all, are also labelled with numbers corresponding to an index surrounding the map. A legend explains additional symbols employed. Cities and highways are also noted, clarifying the ease with which these sites could be reached from major metropolitan areas. Illustrations at top and below the title cartouche are sure to include women, and children, in the idealized outdoor activities, reflecting the values (and marketing strategy) of the Automobile Club. Publication History and Census This map appeared with the December 1954 issue of Westways magazine, published by the Automobile Club of Southern California. It was designed by Lowell Butler, with descriptive notes by William Webb and Phil Townsend Hanna, drawings by Ken Sawyer, and coloring by Harry O. Diamond. As noted on the verso, the map took nearly a year to prepare, including extensive research on sites and their regulations. Created for American se…rvicemen and women during World War II, the map highlights U.S.O. clubs, Y.M.C.A.s, Y.W.C.A.s, and Red Cross facilities. Tourist sites throughout are identified. On the county map, which occupies the recto, sites from Joshua Forest west to the coast are highlighted, including parks, universities, the Rose Bowl (for college football fans), and a chinchilla farm. The smaller map on the recto, which occupies the lower right corner, focuses on the immediate environs of Los Angeles, illustrating the road network. This 1912 Poole Brothers folding map of California was produced for the 'Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway' (often referred to simply as 'the Santa Fe'). The main map displays the state of California and a portion of southern Nevada, shaded for relief, with cities and towns, rail lines (completed and in progress, with those of the Santa Fe and its subsidiaries bolded), steamship lines, county boundaries, and major topographic features (such as Death Valley and Lake Tahoe) noted. A large inset map at the top right displays the entire Santa Fe system between Chicago and California, with orange circles highlighting major stops and attractions (Grand Canyon, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, and Yosemite National Park). Below the inset is a profile of elevation along the route, giving a sense of the dramatic changes in landscape awaiting passengers. Photographs around the map present hotels and tourist attractions in San Francisco, San Diego, and elsewhere in Arizona and California. The verso contains more photographs and promotional text, as well as timetables and fares for the railway's luxurious sleeper-only Pullman service, information on weather and events taking place in California cities, the locations of Santa Fe offices in various cities, and explanations of side tours, as far as the Pacific Northwest, offered by the Santa Fe. A Tale of Two Expositions Large hand illustrations point to San Francisco and San Diego, indicating the locations of the dueling Panama-Pacific and Panama-California Expositions, both of which would be easily accessible via the Santa Fe (which had acquired the Southern California Railway in 1906) and its subsidiaries and partners. Towards the end of the first decade of the 20th century, both cities proposed plans to host an international exposition to celebrate the coming completion of the Panama Canal. The two cities were hardly comparable; San Francisco had a population ten times larger, was better known internationally, and had the added incentive of a desire to celebrate the city's recovery from the destructive earthquake and fire of 1906. But planners in San Diego pressed ahead, even while lacking the backing of both the state and federal governments that San Francisco's exposition enjoyed. In the end, however, funding from bond measures and determination by the San Diego planners resulted in an impressive event (lasting throughout 1915 and 1916), even if it has been far less remembered than its San Francisco rival (February - December 1915). Balboa Park was completely remade, and several of the exposition's structures were retained permanently (more than in San Francisco). The exposition's exotic animal displays laid the foundation for the world-renowned San Diego Zoo. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (often shortened to 'the Santa Fe') was chartered on February 11, 1859, with the stated goal of joining Atchison and Topeka, Kansas with Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Santa Fe reached Albuquerque in 1880 and began creating real estate offices to sell off the land granted to them across Kansas for settlers to make the route economically viable. Santa Fe, the original destination, was reached by a spur branch of the railway from Lamy, New Mexico. Eventually, when the Santa Fe connected with the Southern Pacific at Deming, New Mexico, it completed the second transcontinental railroad route. In 1897, when the Santa Fe traded a railroad line.

Barker's unrecorded 1901 cyanotype or blueprint city planning wall map of San Jose, California - today's 'Capital of Silicon Valley'. It presents the city during an…explosive period of expansion, as new developments and neighborhoods were being added continuously. Given the size and precision of this map, it can only be an official city planning map used by the administration for urban management. A Closer Look The map is oriented towards the east-northeast, with the Coyote River at top and the Guadalupe River and Los Gatos Creek in the middle towards bottom. The City Limits here are far smaller than the city's eventual extent; in the following decades, the unincorporated territory to the west (bottom), including the posh Alameda neighborhood built along the old Camino Real, north, and south, would be annexed. A small legend at right explains symbols used for schools, notes the size of the city's population, and mentions the area of its largest downtown plaza and park. In addition to schools and parks, streets, planned but still undeveloped blocks (at bottom-right), hotels (including the opulent Hotel Vendome), libraries, civic buildings, rail lines and stations, a racetrack and fairgrounds at bottom, waterways, and other features are noted. Naglee Park at the top is not a public park but the estate of the Union Civil War General Henry Morris Naglee (1815 - 1886). Around the time of this map's production, the estate, which was sprawling and contained sumptuous gardens and vineyards, was sold to developers and subdivided for single-family home lots. Retaining the name Naglee Park, it became home to many large and architecturally significant homes (mostly built after the 1906 earthquake) designed in the Tudor and Mission Revival styles. Other developments on the periphery of the city (Hyde Park, Cottage Grove, East San Jose) also hint at its expansion at this time. City of Schools San Jose played an important role in the early history of education in California, perhaps the reason for schools being highlighted so prominently here. The State Normal School, namesake for the square (also known as Washington Sq.), was founded in San Francisco in 1857, moved to San Jose in 1871, and is now San Jose State University. The University of the Pacific - founded 1851 in Santa Clara, also moving to San Jose in 1871 - is noted at bottom-left at College Park. The university relocated to Stockton in 1923 and the Jesuit Bellarmine College Preparatory school took over the campus, but the area retains the name 'College Park.' Perhaps most notable of all is the College de Notre Dame near center, the first college chartered in California in 1851, an all-girls Catholic institution that is the basis for today's Notre Dame de Namur University located in Belmont on the San Francisco Peninsula, while another part of the institution relocated in the 1920s to a different location in downtown San Jose and became Notre Dame High School. Rail Interchange Several railways are noted, including the Southern Pacific Railroad, the narrow-gauge South Pacific Coast Railroad running to Santa Cruz (whose depot is the basis for today's Diridon Station, a major interchange for Amtrak and Caltrain), and the Central Pacific Railroad's Niles Division, which linked nearby Fremont with Sacramento and the original Transcontinental Railroad. The city also had a nascent streetcar and interurban electric trolley system, not indicated here. The trolleys eventually ran as far south as Los Gatos and as far north as Palo Alto (by 1910, independent lines were consolidated as the Peninsular Railway, a subsidiary of the Southern Pacific). Attempts at Chinese and Japanese Exclusion Most of the land north of Taylor St. at left belonged to James D. Phelan (1861 - 1930), a banker who was the Mayor of San Francisco when this map was produc.

This is Alexis-Hubert Jaillot's impressive and scarce 1692 map of North America. The map offers much of interest, including a bold presentation of California as an Isla…nd, evidence of otherwise unpublished preliminary data from the 1673 Marquette-Joliett Expedition of the upper Mississippi watershed, a hopeful open-ended mapping of the western Great Lakes, and a large apocryphal freshwater sea in Appalachia. A Closer Look The map covers North America and Central America from Baffin Bay to the Spanish Main. It extends westward past an Insular California to include Terre de Iesso (a speculative mapping of Hokkaido) and eastwards past the Azores to include the British Isles. It includes a striking mapping of the Mississippi (Chucagua), which, while inaccurate in the southernmost regions, likely reflects Joliet's verbal reports from the seminal 1673 Marquette-Joliet Expedition. Unusual Mississippi River The Mississippi River is here identified as 'Chucagua,' a term derived from the journals of the De Soto Expedition. De Soto crossed the Mississippi River in 1541, naming it after the wild garlic that grew prolifically on the river edge, named in Algonquin shikaakwa . (This is the same term that the city 'Chicago' is named after.) The term was transliterated into French for the 1670 translation of De Soto's journals by Pierre Richelet as the 'Chucagua River'. The same is also frequently called 'De Soto's River'. Mapped here by Jaillot, the river has its outlet in 'Bahia del Spiritu Santo', likely Galveston Bay, but inland bends sharply east, then north, to roughly correspond to the Upper Mississippi. This is a cartographic innovation unique to this map and is present on no known prior map. Jaillot's sources behind this cartographic innovation can only be preliminary data from the 1673 expedition of Jacques Marquette (1637 - 1675) and Louis Joliet (1645 - 1700). From the cartography, this makes sense, as the map correctly but tenuously reflects Marquette and Joliet's four-month voyage in the Upper Mississippi, as well as the fact that they turned around at the Arkansas River - thus avoiding confrontation with the Spanish to the south, but also leaving unclear the true route south and outlet of the Lower Mississippi. The records of the Marquette and Joliet voyage were not widely disseminated and were kept under wraps until published in 1681. Nonetheless, Joliet did return to Paris shortly after the expedition and was extensively interviewed. Jaillot, with his royal connections, would have been privileged to this information - marking this map as a state-of-the-art production and likely the first to reveal any reconnaissance from the Marquette-Joliet Expedition. Sanson's Cartography Aside from the above Mississippi River data, Jaillot derived this expanded format map from the earlier work of Nicholas Sanson, a figure who revolutionized French cartography. We can trace the fundamental design of this map to two Sanson maps. First, Sanson's 1666 wall map of North America - on which most of the basic cartography is based - and which survives in only two examples. Second, Sanson's 1657 map of California, from which both maps derive their model for Insular California - itself sourced from maps referencing the English explorer Luke Foxe's expedition in search of the Northwest Passage. Thus, the form of California seen here follows the Second Sanson model or, more properly, the Luke Foxe model. Foxe is credited with introducing the curious form of northern Insular California, including the Bay of Talago, the Rio de Estiete, and the unusual peninsula extending from the mainland, Agubela de Gato. The origin of this cartography beyond Foxe remains a mystery. Adopted by Sanson in 1657, this form became standard convention for the representation of Insular California until the early 18th century. Cali.

Barker map of the Foothills Preserve and Foothills Park in Los Altos and Los Altos Hills, California. It is a window into the early development of each from early land grants. A Closer Look Then known as the Corita Vineyard…, the map depicts the immediate vicinity of the intersection of Moody Road and Page Mill Road. Course tables detail both Page Mill Road and Moody Road, providing distances. Contour lines present the topography in twenty-five-foot intervals. Two notations, just above the intersection of the two roads, mark proposed sites for a residence and tanks. This map includes the addition of a private road not on the 1905 original. The road was surveyed by J. V. Neuman and constructed in 1912, hence our dating. Paul Shoup, an executive of the Southern Pacific Railroad, and his colleagues formed the Altos Land Company in 1906, leading to the urban development of modern Los Altos. Corita Vineyard: Some Historical Context No record of the Corita Vineyard appears online, but we have been able to piece together some of the historical context. The story began in 1840 when 4,439 acres of land were given in grant to José Gorgonio and his son José Ramon by Governor Juan Alvarado of Mexico, which they named La Purissima Conception Rancho. Gorgonio sold Rancho La Purisima Concepcion to Juana Briones Miranda in 1844. In 1861, Briones (1802 - 1889) sold three-quarters of her rancho to Martin Murphy Jr. of Sunnyvale. She gave the remaining 1,130 acres to her children, who went by their father's name, Miranda. A. B. Blanco acquire ownership of the Corita Vineyard by 1905. Paul Shoup, an executive of the Southern Pacific Railroad, and his colleagues formed the Altos Land Company in 1906, leading to the urban development of modern Los Altos. Los Altos Hills followed shortly after when the adjacent estates of La Purissima Conception Rancho and Rancho San Antonio were consolidated. The 2 large ranchos were eventually parceled and sold as smaller ranches for cattle grazing and vineyards, mostly of Zinfandel grapes. Cyanotype: Why So Blue? Cyanotype is a photo-reprographic technique developed in 1842 by the British astronomer John Herschel (1792 - 1871). Sometimes called a 'sunprint,' the technique employs a solution of ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide , which painted on white paper or cloth, reacts when exposed to sunlight to dye the object a brilliant blue. Areas blocked from ultraviolet exposure remain undyed and white. Herschel developed the technique to reproduce his astronomical notes, but others quickly realized that any object capable of blocking light could be used to quickly and easily create a cyanotype image. By the late 19th century, the process became popular with designers, military, architects, and engineers (blueprints), who used the cost effective technique to quickly and accurately reproduce images in the field. Cyanotyping is limited in that only a single copy can be made at a time, so it was only practical for short-term fieldwork. It is also of note that cyanotypes remain extremely reactive to light and, over time, fade or degrade, making them inherently ephemeral. The process fell out of fashion in most places by the 1920s, but remains in use in some parts of the world, such as India and Nepal, to this day. Publication History and Census After studying the map, we believe Curtis M. Barker conducted the original survey in 1905, likely for A.B. Blanco himself. Since Barker died in 1908, Blanco could not rehire him to survey the new road he wanted to be built in 1912. Hence the other surveyor's name, and, from the way the cyanotype has been printed, we believe this new road was added directly to the original map created by Barker. Then this cyanotype was reproduced from that original. This is the only known example.

The Palm Springs Municipal Airport is illustrated and labeled as well. An inset along the right side details Cathedral City. Street indexes for Palm Springs and Cathedral City are situated along the top border near an inset map of Palm Springs Bikeways. Advertisements for local hotels, country clubs, stores, and real estate agents occupy the rest of the sheet. Verso Content A map of the entire Coachella Valley from Desert Hot Springs south to Salton Sea occupies the center of the verso. More advertisements create a border around the central map, along with indexes providing information about hotels and apartments, dining and entertainment, and shopping and services. Publication History and Census This map was created and published by Ken and Ruth Du Maurier of The Palm Springs Map Guide in 1974. This piece is not cataloged in OCLC. This is the only known cataloged example of the 1974 edition, however editions of this map were published annually both before and after this edition.

A scarce separately issued map of Death Valley and surroundings near the border of California and Nevada, produced c. 1930 by the Automobile Club of Southern California. It captures the region at a moment of transition from an isolated base for scattered… mining operations to a tourist attraction known for its hot springs and stunning natural beauty. A Closer Look Oriented towards the northwest, the map covers the area between Beatty, Nevada ('the Gateway to Death Valley') and Shoshone, California near the border of Inyo and San Bernardino County. Death Valley and the Amargosa River are marked out in a strip down the center of the map, with elevations below sea level noted at various points. On either side of the valley are mountains, canyons, springs, wells, mills, and mining operations, especially directed at extracting borax. Many features have colorful names, such as the 'Devil's Golf Course,' which is not a golf course at all, but a desolate field of jagged little hills made of salt that have been eroded over centuries to look like a landscape from an alien world. Several towns are indicated around the valley; these rose and fell with mining operations, and most are now ghost towns or nearly so. Two locations are named after Christian Brevoort Zabriskie, long-time general manager of the Pacific Coast Borax Company, the largest operation in Death Valley in the late 19th and early 20th century. At the same time, the appearance of the Stovepipe Wells Hotel and Furnace Creek Inn point to the future of Death Valley as a tourist attraction and refuge for convalescents. The First Proper Road through Death Valley The unsigned road running north-south along the valley is noted at left as 'toll road'; this was the Eichbaum Toll Road, named after its creator Herman Eichbaum. After several attempts to build a toll road in the early 1920s, Eichbaum was finally able to construct and open this road in 1926 (today it is CA SR 190). Other paved (thick bold lines) and unpaved (thin lines) roads are also marked. Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad Also notable is the Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad, which was meant to connect Tonopah, Nevada (north of Beatty) with San Diego, but which never reached either intended terminus on its own rails. Like limited earlier attempts to build a railroad through Death Valley, the Tonopah and Tidewater was primarily designed to move borax. The main line intersected with a narrow-gauge branch line to Ryan, California (formerly the Death Valley Railroad) at Death Valley Junction (also known as Amargosa). Ryan was a classic company town built around a borax mine that became a ghost town when mining operations shut down (the remnants of the town are now owned by the Death Valley Conservancy). From Hellhole to Tourist Haven Death Valley was named by early gold rush-era emigrants from the eastern United States who were stuck in the valley for several harrowing weeks and barely managed to survive. In the late 19th century, operations were established to extract salts, borate, and talc, and later gold, silver, copper, and lead. However, the climate was so harsh and infrastructure so underdeveloped that 'twenty mule teams' (actually two horses and eighteen mules) were required to brave travel through the valley, or, in later periods, to get borax to the rudimentary mining railroads built there. The borax mines and other operations declined over the course of the early 20th century, but soon afterwards, tourists began flocking to Death Valley's springs. Eccentric millionaires built elaborate Spanish Revival homes in the region, movie stars began to extol its virtues, and the Stovepipe Wells Hotel and Furnace Creek Inn noted here became famous throughout the Southwest. This tourism boom was made possible by the increasing use of automobiles and the improvement of roads, such as they were, to and through Death Valley, neatly aligning with the interes.

Pictorial vignettes highlight sites along the highways, including Death Valley, Arch…es National Monument, Rocky Mountain National Park, and the Royal Gorge. Other vignettes reinforce stereotypical ideas of the American West, including cattle, cowboys and rodeos, striking it rich while mining, and gambling. Black lines trace the routes of the two highways from Denver and Pueblo, Colorado, to San Francisco and Long Beach, California. Large black dots mark cities and towns that can act as waypoints during a vacationer's trip through the region. Photographs of incredible scenery, tourist sites, and the region's successful mining industry appear above and below the central map. U.S. Route 6 U.S. Route 6 is a U.S. highway that currently connects Provincetown, Massachusetts with Bishop, California. Also known as the Grand Army of the Republic Highway in honor of the American Civil War veterans association, U.S. 6 was the longest highway in the country from 1936 until 1964, when it ended at Long Beach, California. California renumbered its highways in 1964, which changed U.S. 6's route, and caused it to become shorter than U.S. 20, demoting U.S. 6 to the second longest highway in the country. According to American historian George R. Stewart, 'Route 6 runs uncertainly from nowhere to nowhere, scarcely to be followed from one end to the other, except by some devoted eccentric.' Publication History and Census This map was created and published by the Utah Bank Note Company c. 1953. This piece is not cataloged in OCLC and we have found a single reference to a cataloged example, which appears to be part of the collection at the Lebanon-Leclade County Library in Lebanon, Missouri.

A highly detailed topographic map of Yosemite Valley published by Underwood and Underwood in 1902 as part of the booklet Yosemite Valley through the Stereoscope . A Closer Look A topographic map of the valley and its surrounding…s, noting peaks with their elevations, waterfalls, cliffs, hiking trails, wagons roads, and several small settlements and camps. The major wagon roads, alluded to in the title, are Big Oak Flat Road, Glacier Point Road, Wawona Road (not labelled), and the Coulterville Road (not labeled). Major landmarks such as El Capitan, Cathedral Rocks, Bridal Veil Falls, Glacier Point, North Dome, and more are also labeled. A small inset map of the United States appears at top-left, demonstrating the location of Yosemite within California and within the country as a whole. Red overprint indicates the location and perspective of the stereograph photographs in the accompanying booklet, while red text at bottom provides a full guide for using the map in conjunction with the photographs. Yosemite State Park? The Yosemite State Park Boundary present here is perplexing to a modern observer, but this was a legacy of the original legislation and agreements established to protect the area, in which the most majestic part of the Yosemite Valley was established as a federal grant (later a national park) while the surrounding area and Mariposa Grove were set aside as a California State Park. In 1903, shortly after this map's publication, President Theodore Roosevelt made a consequential visit to Yosemite. While there, he met with John Muir, who helped convince Roosevelt that dividing Yosemite between state and federal control was problematic and inefficient. Upon returning to Washington, Roosevelt successfully advocated for the Yosemite Recession Bill, which he signed in June 1906, placing the entire Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove under federal protection. Photographing Yosemite Yosemite captured the imagination of nearly all the early Americans who visited it, resulting soon afterward in travelogues and paeons to the area's natural beauty, as well as attempts to photograph it. The first photographer to capture Yosemite was Charles Leander Weed (1824 - 1903) in 1859, who displayed them in San Francisco the same year, increasing public interest in the region. Weed's work greatly influenced Carleton Watkins (1829 - 1916), who unquestionably became the most influential early photographer of the valley. A childhood friend of Collis Huntington (1821 - 1900), who went on to become one of the wealthiest men in California, Watkins moved to California soon after the Gold Rush with no knowledge of or experience with photography. Falling into the profession rather accidentally after moving to San Francisco, Watkins proved adept at capturing compelling scenes with Daguerreotype technology, including stereoviews, which produced two nearly identical images which could be placed side-by-side to mimic the illusion of depth and three-dimensionality. In July 1861, Watkins ventured to Yosemite with two cameras, one stereoscopic and the other being a mammoth-plate camera (using 18 by 22 inch glass plates). When he returned to San Francisco, Watkins had more than 130 images, which were quickly brought to New York City and displayed in 1862, to public astonishment. Watkins' photographs have been credited with convincing the U.S. Congress to protect the valley two years later and remain among the most iconic images of Yosemite ever captured. A train of photographers, including Eadweard Muybridge and Ansel Adams, followed in Watkins' footsteps, deploying improved technologies to attempt ever-grander images of the valley's stunning landscapes. Roads to and through Yosemite Soon after the Yosemite Valley became well-known for its natural beauty in the mid-19th century, efforts were made to establish wagon roads to the valley. A brilliantly-colored c. 1973 Weekend Outdoor Production map of Lake Shasta, northern California, highlighting fishing and recreation. A Closer Look Situated at the confluence of the Sacramento, McCloud, and Pit Rivers and several tributaries,…Lake Shasta is a reservoir formed by a massive dam built in the 1930s and early 1940s (discussed below). Aside from the main rivers forming the reservoir, mountains (with elevations noted), creeks, and other natural features are indicated, Campgrounds, resorts, trailer parks, marinas, highways (Interstate-5), and other roads, rail lines, hiking trails, and sites relevant for visitors are also identified. Notes relating to fishing appear throughout, including good locations and methods for catching fish, as well as the prominent species. A legend appears at right, along with a small inset of the area around Stein Creek, southeast of the area seen here, and a larger inset of northern California, displaying highways and interstates. The verso includes advertisements for businesses of interest to tourists, such as accommodations (including 'flotel' houseboats), restaurants, bait and tackle shops, and more. A text section at top-right discusses the history of the dam and reservoir and the opportunities for outdoor recreation there. The folding map is formatted as a mailer, so the address line appears on the outside when folded. The Shasta River and California's Water Crisis Through both natural and manmade means, including the Shasta Dam (completed 1945) and the resulting Shasta Lake, runoff from Mt. Shasta and other nearby mountains provides much of the freshwater for areas to the south, especially the Central Valley, an agricultural powerhouse. The dam, one of the largest in the world, was an engineering marvel and, when completed in 1945, was hailed as the crowning achievement of the federal government's Central Valley Project. As California's sources of freshwater have been imperiled in recent years by droughts and rising temperatures, proposals have been made to raise the dam to allow for greater storage of the abundant waters running off the mountains along the California-Oregon border. Environmental groups and the indigenous Wintun people, whose lands were almost entirely flooded by the original dam project, have opposed these efforts. Publication History and Census This map was prepared and published by Weekend Outdoor Productions around 1973. A smaller, alternative printing, paradoxically marked as a 'deluxe edition,' is cataloged among the holdings of the University of California Davis and the Library of Congress in the OCLC, while the present printing appears unrecorded. A Closer Look This colorful map, printed on a napkin, marks principal cities, and is decorated pictorially with beach parties, fishing scenes, depict…ions of Hollywood film shoots, and pictures of California's flora, fauna, and produce. A battleship cruises off the coast of San Diego. A Native American is pictured near the Hoopa Indian Reservation; west of Mount Shasta, a copse of Sequoias is pictured. Oil fields, observatories, farms and deserts are depicted. A handful of California's parks are shown, including Death Valley and Yosemite National Park. The reverse fold lists an array of 'Interesting Facts about California,' offering information of the state's size, population, produce, and industry. (For example, the reader learns that 'California is largely an agricultural state, with about 25 percent of its area devoted to farming.' and 'California also has the highest and lowest points in the United States - Mount Whitney, 14,195 feet above sea level, and Badwater in Death Valley, 279.8 feet below sea level. Oddly enough, these two points are only 60 miles apart and can be seen simultaneously from Dante's View in Death Valley National Monument.') A Full Series? Beach Products appears to have produced this piece of Californiana as part of a series of 'State Map-Naps.' We are aware of examples not only dedicated to Florida, but also for Indiana, Michigan, California, and Minnesota. While it would be reasonable to assume a plan to produce a 'Map Nap' for every state in the Union, we have seen no others on the market, and it may be that the project was cut short. Publication History and Census This map was printed by Beach Products Inc. of Kalamazoo, Michigan, having been copyrighted in 1954. (Beach Products were a paper goods company less known for their maps and more for their napkins.) We see no examples of the California Map-Nap in OCLC, but there is a single listing for another in the series (Michigan: Water Wonderland) in the collection of the Library of Michigan.
