The book is reasonably firmly bound in what appears to be the publisher's mid-19th century dark green cloth covered boards, lettered and decorated in gilt and blind, the cloth is slightly marked and rubbed with small tears, the extremities are bumped and there are the beginnings of splits to the hinges…at the spine ends. The text block is slightly foxed, marked and age toned, it is slightly cracked at points, there are a few gatherings protruding, and some page corners have been dog-eared or creased. From the library of notable parapsychologist and paranormal investigator, Alan Gauld (1932-2024), with his small bookplate to the front pastedown, and ink ownership inscription to the front endpaper. An important early history of the Spiritualist movement in America, beginning with the sensational occult phenomena centred around the Fox sisters in 1848, which Capron witnessed, the rapid increase in practicing mediums over the subsequent six years and the growing popularity of séances and public demonstrations of table-rapping and other supernatural manifestations. The first edition is uncommon in commerce.
