Captain Hugh Clapperton was a Scottish naval officer and explorer of West and Central Africa. Major Dixon Denham was an English soldier, explorer of West Central Africa, and ultimately Governor of Sierra Leone. Denham and Clapperton were always at odds with one another.

Lower board has some white spotting. Some light soiling to boards. Marbled endpapers, front free endpaper damaged along leading edge. Plate 18 of the River Gambarou is missing.
