First published in 1830 (now rare), republished in this edition by Leo Cooper; 176 pages including comprehensive Index. Condition of hardcover: lightly toned on top edge, else Fine. Dustjacket is Very Good Plus. This classic account of life on campaign in the Walcheren, Peninsular and Waterloo campaigns between 1809 and 1815 is reproduced as it was published in 1830, only with a reset in a contemporary style. The author, Captain John Kincaid of the 95th Regiment, later to be honored in recognition of its magnificent service under Wellington as a separate corps within the Army, The Rifle Brigade, brings to life the trials of war. Kincaid focuses on his own experiences and the activities of his beloved regiment and the Light Division, of which the 95th formed so important a part. It is a wonderful, factual memoir of the rigors of four years of hardship and danger. Historical, exciting, and adventurous. Zustand: New. 2007 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1830). SB. xvi+351pp.Published Price £9.95 First published in 1830, Captain Sir John Kincaid's Adventures in the Rifle Brigade, in the Peninsula, France, and the Netherlands from 1809 to 1815 is an important primary source for British light infantry service during the Napoleonic Wars. Drawing upon his own campaigning experience, Kincaid provides a vivid eyewitness record of combat, marching, camp life and the character of the celebrated 95th Rifles. His service began with the ill-fated Walcheren Expedition of 1809, where disease inflicted devastating losses. He subsequently campaigned under Wellington in Portugal and Spain, witnessing the Lines of Torres Vedras, the sieges of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz, and the victory at Vittoria. He then followed the army across the Pyrenees into France and through the concluding operations around Toulouse.Returning to active service in 1815 as adjutant of the 1st Battalion, Kincaid fought at Quatre Bras and Waterloo. His first-hand observations capture not only major operations but the everyday realities of campaigning, regimental comradeship and life under fire. Combining immediacy, humour and sharp observation, this memoir remains an invaluable eyewitness account of the British Army at war. Book.…

Zustand: New. 2007 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1830). HB. xvi+351pp. The Rifle Brigade, one of the British Army's crack infantry units, took part in most of Britian's land campaigns in the Napoleonic Wars and this memoir recounts the adventures of a Scottish officer who was there for all of them from Walcheren in 1805 to Waterloo in 1815. The heart of the memoir, however, is the Peninsula War in which Kincaid served under Wellington at the lines ofTorres Vedras, and in the battle of Fuentes d'Onoro, the sieges of Ciudad Roderigo and Badajoz, and the battles of Salamanca and Vittoria. The author describes the pursuit of Marshal Soult across the Pyrenees and the battles of Nivelle and Toulouse. The memoir concludes with the Waterloo campaign in which KIncaid fought at Quatre-Bras and Waterloo itself. This is an invaluable addition to the bookshelves of Napoleonic war addicts, as seen through the eyes of an intelligent writer who seems to have been at the sharp end from first to last. Book.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First published in 1830, this is a first edition, first impression thus of 1997. Some very slight edge wear to top of jacket and spine, not price clipped (£16.95), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy. 176pp, map endpapers. John Kincaid's memoirs are among the most important records of the Napoleonic Wars and were one of the three principal sources for the Sharpe television series. His presence at famous battles alone would not have made Kincaid's memoirs the classic they have become. This unassuming Scottish officer narrates many minor incidents, often of a humorous or embarrassing nature, which doubtless happened to many soldiers of the period but would otherwise have gone unrecorded. Kincaid awoke on the morning of Waterloo to find that his horse had wandered off, and spent much of his time before the battle trying to find it. Later in the bottle, Kincaid attempted to draw his sabre to ward off attacking French cavalrymen, only to find that the previous night's rain had rusted it fast in its scabbard. Ideal for all Sharpe fans. Jacket by Roni Wilkinson after J. P. Beadle (illustrator). …
