Approx. 400 pages with associated tables and plates. Octavo. Original three-quarter calf with red leather spine label: "SCIENTIFIC PAPERS BY THOS. CARNELLEY". Scattered author's manuscript comments and corrections. A very good copy. This valuable volume, containing 39 publications (mostly offprints, 1872-1884), was assembled by their author, the English chemist, Thomas Carnelley (1852-1890), and includes his classic 1884 paper (offprint) on the color of chemical compounds as a function of their atomic weights. Of special importance is the first printed account in advance of the patent of Edison's electric pen for making a duplicating stencil, and Carnelley's central role in bringing its notice to public attention. Edison's device was the first mass produced motor powered appliance ever offered for sale. Bill Burns recounts the background of how Carnelley came to lecture at the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society on Feb. 22, 1876 on the invention and to publish it as an 8-page pamphlet with plate at the time (see: B. Burns, Edison's Electric Pen and Duplicating Press - online). Only one copy is located on World Cat. at Manchester Lib. That copy is in a similar author assembled volume. A third copy is in another similar volume sold by The Antiquarian Scientist as part of its Periodic Table Collection, Cat. 42, item 84, no. 7 and is now in a UK university library. Skinner Auctions, Sale 1911, lot 164, the cover item, is an Edison Electric Pen that sold in March 1999. The pamphlet is of obvious rarity.…
