Die sieben Kapitel unterscheiden sich stark im Umfang; den meisten Raum nimmt in Cassiodors Werk die Dialektik ein, wohingegen Geometrie und Arithmetik nur mit kurzen Skizzen vertreten sind. - Der lateinische Text, der hier abgedruckt wird und der Neuübersetzung zugrundeliegt, folgt der Edition von R.A.B. Mynors, Oxford 1963. - Magnus Aurelius Cassiodorus Senator (ca. 485 - ca. 580), Abkömmling einer vornehmen römischen Familie und Kanzler Theoderichs d. Gr., zog sich in den Wirren der Gotenkriege aus der Politik zurück und gründete auf den väterlichen Gütern (im heutigen Kalabrien) das Kloster Vivariense und machte es zu einer Pflanzstätte der Wissenschaft. Als "Wissenschaftsprogramm" verfaßte Cassiodor die 'Einführung in die geistlichen und weltlichen Wissenschaften', ein bibliographisch-methodisches Handbuch für die Bibelarbeit im Vivariense. Für seine Zeit keineswegs selbstverständlich ist Cassiodors grundsätzliche Anerkennung und heuristische Nutzung der weltlichen Wissenschaften, an deren Kanonisierung als Sieben Freie Künste er maßgeblichen Anteil hat. Insofern Cassiodor wissenschaftsgeschichtlich eine Brücke zu Mittelalter und Neuzeit schlägt, kann die Bedeutung seiner Einführung kaum überschätzt werden. Er verbindet dabei den Glauben mit der weltlichen Bildung zu einem Ganzen, "denn was du auch studierst und zu welcher Erkenntnis du auch kommst - ums so besser schmeckt's dir, je mehr du ihm die Würze eines überirdischen Tuns gibst". August 1830. --- Der Begriff Homilie (griech, homilein vertraut miteinander umgehen, vertraut mitei…nander reden) bedeutet so viel wie Gespräch, Rede, Unterricht. Oft werden die Begriffe Homilie und Predigt synonym verwandt. Homilie und Predigt haben jedoch unterschiedliche Absichten und Zielgruppen. Während eine Predigt die Großtaten Gottes preist (lat. praedicare preisen) und Menschen für den Glauben begeistern und Nichtgläubige für den Glauben gewinnen will, hat die Homilie einen mystagogischen und unterweisenden Charakter für Gläubige. Die Homiletik als Wissenschaft beschäftigt sich mit der Lehre von der Homilie bzw. Predigt. Als Homiliar(ium) oder Panegyrikon wird eine Sammlung bibelerklärender Predigten bezeichnet. In der römisch-katholischen Kirche bezeichnet Homilie die Predigt innerhalb der Heiligen Messe, in der die vorgetragenen biblischen Lesungen ausgelegt werden. Nach geltendem Kirchenrecht unterscheidet sie sich von jener Predigtform, die außerhalb der Messfeier gehalten wird und für die nach Maßgabe der Vorschriften der Bischofskonferenz Laien zugelassen werden, wenn das unter bestimmten Umständen notwendig oder in Einzelfällen als nützlich angeraten ist. An Sonntagen und gebotenen Feiertagen ist die Homilie in allen Messen, die mit Beteiligung des Volkes gefeiert werden, verbindlicher Bestandteil der Liturgie; sie darf nur aus schwerwiegendem Grund entfallen. An anderen Tagen wird sie empfohlen. Wegen der engen Verknüpfung der Homilie mit dem Weihesakrament und den daraus resultierenden Ämtern des Lehrens und Heiligens ist sie ausschließlich dem Bischof, Priester oder Diakon vorbehalten. Demgemäß ist die Homilie ein Wesensbestandteil des kirchlichen Lehramtes (Munus docendi) und primär Aufgabe des Bischofs. Dies wird auch in der Liturgie deutlich, wenn er bei der Homilie die Mitra mit den zwei Vittae trägt.
