Baum's beloved Wizard of Oz story is adapted for "very little folk" ages 5-9 by Allen Chaffee from Maud Baum's 1950 adaptation of L. Frank Baum's original 1900 tale, with illustrations in both black-and-white & full color throughout the 64 pages of text by Anton Loeb. A First Edition in this format from 1950 (First, thus), this quarto (8.25" x 11") has bright yellow boards colorfully decorated with the book's characters both front & back. Condition is Fair, downgraded due to paper loss along front joint & at both ends of spine/all corners. Else, very clean, sewn binding tight & square, pages white with just a whisper of tanning to edges, unmarked save for former owner's information in neat pen to the"This book belongs to" box inside front cover. This edition features vibrant pictorial endpapers and full-color cover art, with clean, bright interior pages and strong color retention across both color and black and white illustrations. Boards show light rubbing, corner wear, and small abrasions, but the binding remains sound and the interior completely unmarked. No dust jacket, as issued in this Random House pictorial board format. Copyright page lists the original Baum/Denslow copyrights (1900, 1903) and later renewals (1928, 1931), followed by text and illustration copyrights dated 1950 with no subsequent printings indicated, consistent with the true first edition/first printing of the Chaffee/Loeb adaptation. A solid and appealing collectible example of this beloved children's retelling.
