The collection brings together Robert Louis Stevenson's "The Body Snatchers," Edgar Allan Poe's "The Black Cat," Washington Irving's "The Adventures of the German Student," Oscar Wilde's "The Canterville Ghost," Daphne du Maurier's "Escort," M. R. James' "Wailing Well," A. M. Burrage's "The Sweeper," and Charles Dickens' "The Signalman." Keeping supplies atmospheric black-and-white illustrations throughout, ranging from tightly rendered narrative drawings to much more expressionistic images in which figures seem to emerge from overlapping lines, shadows, and washes. The combination is unusually effective: this is as much a Charles Keeping illustrated book as it is a ghost-story anthology. The bibliographic record confirms 142 pages for this American edition. The copyright page explicitly states "First American edition published in 1986 by Peter Bedrick Books", while also recording the book's first publication in Britain that same year by Blackie and Son Ltd.
