The Skoda heavy industrial and armaments complex was founded in 1859; and the Laurin & Klement company began to make bicycles in 1895, then motorcycles, expanding into motor car manufacture in 1905. The skills and diligence of the directors and the workforce kept these firms in existence - indeed prosperous - even in the most difficult times. Laurin & Klement automobiles were famous for their build quality and excellent design, winning many international sporting events.
