A magazine edited by Sixties poet and radical, John Sinclair, co-founder of the White Panthers Party, and one-time manager of the band MC5. This issue of the magazine was rushed into production shortly before Sinclair was to report to jail for an earlier conviction for selling marihuana to an undercover agent. His incarceration lead to a host of protests, most notably Allen Ginsberg, who rushed the stage during The Who's Woodstock performance to plead Sinclair's case, and John Lennon, who recorded the song "John Sinclair" on his album, *Some Time in New York City*. Sinclair is a Detroit poet who was the leader of the White Panther Party, an activist, underground newspaper editor and the manager of the MC5 rock group. The second issue of this important literary and art journal with contributions by Charles Olson, Irving Layton, Kenneth Rexroth, Robert Creeley, Paul Blackburn, Toda Tomoya, Irving Layton, Douglas Woolf, Kizu Toyotaro, Lucy Lapp, and Ronald Mason. The Black Mountain Review developed out of a correspondence between Robert Creeley and Charles Orson, the rector of Black Mountain College. With these journals they aimed to generate an understanding of the emerging poets of the generation and to attract some attention to the college itself. It spanned just 7 volumes, running from 1954-1957. A few of this issue's features include Antonin Artaud, Toda Tomoya, and reproductions of Mayan Sculpture. The cover was designed by Japanese artist and poet Katue Kitasono. In Very Good condition with some age toning and foxing to the covers and bumping and wear to spine ends. Back cover has spotted wear and some markings to the lower right corner. Interior pages are unmarked with occasional minor foxing. Pages are lightly creased to the upper and lower right corners. Seventy-two chapbooks bound in six octavo volumes (24cm); bespoke marbled paper-covered boards with brick cloth spine and gilt volume number; unpaginated. Boards sturdy and square with occasional very light rubbing at spine ends. Bindings sound and pages unmarked. Thirty of the issues signed by 16 contributors (some signing multiple), including Robert Kelly (x4), Clayton Eshleman (x7), Charles Bukowski (x2), Robert Creeley (x2), Joyce Carol Oates (x3), Diane Wakoski (x2), and others. Eshleman's signature accompanied in six instances across volumes by the inscription "for Herb Yellin," the dedicatee being founder and publisher of the fellow-California-based Lord John Press, established toward the end of the Sparrow pamphlet series' run. Given the placement of the Eshleman inscriptions and the bindings being more in the Lord John Press style, we presume these were Yellin's copies that he had bound rather than a rebinding of Black Sparrow's Autograph Edition of the same volumes.
