La obra está escrita en forma de libro de enseñanza, explicando cada punto a modo de definiciones; se exponen y enseñan todos los conocimientos astronómicos, astrológicos, matemáticos, y en general todo el saber científico de su tiempo. El libro fue impreso por vez primera en Sevilla en 1548 siendo tal el éxito que, en espacio de cuarenta años se reeditó en más de diez ocasiones. Esta edición tiene especial interés por haber sido realizada por su padre, Alonso de Chaves, haciendo las correcciones que se anuncian. Dividida en cuatro partes, la primera trata del tiempo, de sus divisiones y de los medios de apreciarle; la segunda parte habla de los cielos, de los elementos y de los planetas, con 12 grabados para los signos del zodiaco, y 3 que representan el sistema astronómico elemental y la tierra. La tercera parte comprende el lunario y las fiestas móviles desde 1554 hasta 1600, la explicación de los eclipses con 2 láminas generales y 46 pequeños grabados que representan las fases de todos los eclipses visibles en Sevilla hasta 1602. La cuarta parte es un tratado de astrología, pronósticos, influencias planetarias, etc. Tiene una lámina que figura un hombre desnudo en el cual se marcan las venas en que conviene hacer las sangrías. Concluye el libro con una tabla de las longitudes de 260 ciudades de Europa y América, arregladas al meridiano de Sevilla.
