La sua preoccupazione per il fenomeno della luce ebbe un'influenza determinante in ogni periodo del suo lavoro. Nel momento in cui i primi processi fotografici a colori divennero ampiamente disponibili all'inizio degli anni trenta, egli padroneggiava il bianco e nero, e si rivolse immediatamente a questa nuova grande invenzione.
