During this period Vuillard and his widowed mother shared a series of modest rented apartments in central Paris in which the artist sustained a works-on-paper and (from 1897) amateur photographic practice out of his 'studio-bedroom,' whilst in the dining room Madame Vuillard ran the corsetry business employing a handful of seamstresses including Vuillard's sister. In these apartments Vuillard and Madame Vuillard operated mutually supportive, parallel working practices, to the extent that Vuillard put his mother and the fabric of her atelier 'in the picture' whilst she posed for his pencil and camera or developed his photographs in the kitchen. Their Parisian co-habitation, and Vuillard's portrayal of his mother across a range of pictorial media, lasted until Madame Vuillard's death as an elderly woman in 1928.

Damit begann die langwierige Entstehungsgeschichte dieser großformatigen Gemälde, die bis heute den Treppenauf-gang des Museums schmücken. Zwar lieferte der Künstler sogleich Entwürfe, die auch gutgeheißen wurden, doch dann folgten weitere Fassungen und immer neue Überarbeitungen der Bilder. Nach einer länger dauern-den Pause konnte Roussel die Arbeit erst 1926 vollenden.

Ker-Xavier Roussel (1867-1944), peu connu du grand public, est l'un des artistes les plus originaux de la génération postimpressionniste. Résolument moderne dans sa manière de peindre, mais farouchement attaché aux textes antiques, il occupe une place à part parmi les Nabis. Au tournant du siècle, il s'écarte du mysticisme de Maurice Denis et des scènes de la vie quotidienne où excellent ses amis Pierre Bonnard et Édouard Vuillard. Désormais, satyres et nymphes, bacchantes et faunes habitent des paysages rayonnants de couleurs. Entre jardin privé, où l'on croise ses enfants, et jardins rêvés, qui invitent Acis, Galatée, Eurydice ou Léda, Roussel mêle librement l'intime à l'imaginaire. Cet ouvrage constitue le catalogue de la première rétrospective d'ampleur consacrée au peintre depuis plusieurs années.
