Much of what we kn…ow about cranes in the UK is contained in his memory and notebooks. John worked with Chris Durdin to put that knowledge and a selection of his many photos into this book. It makes a fascinating story and should help anyone involved in protecting cranes as, we hope, they slowly spread across the UK. Part one, The Horsey Story tells the story of cranes at Horsey in John's words, as told to Chris. Much of this draws on John's memories and the many and detailed notebooks that John kept. Added to these are the diaries, reports and recollections of others, such as Peter Allard, Mike Everett and several crane wardens. The year-by-year accounts include elements of the story that are linked to that year. More general notes on behaviour and related subjects are in part two. Part two, Cranes: History, Observations and Management includes a history of cranes in the UK, how 'Crane Country' was shaped, and information on land management as it affects crane habitats for breeding and feeding. Observations on their behaviour at Horsey show the time and energy that John Buxton and his team of wardens have dedicated to cranes. The difficulty of access into fens and the birds' secretive and sensitive nature make the observations made at Horsey especially valuable. We hope these will prove useful to land managers elsewhere in the UK as crane numbers increase. Though this book is primarily about Norfolk's cranes, the common crane is the most widely distributed of the 15 crane species. In part three, Cranes in Europe, Nick Upton describes the challenges facing cranes in the rest of Europe, charting their recent rise in numbers that has contributed to their reappearance in the UK. At age 41 Eberhardt left Europe at the invitation of a Moravian settlement in Salem, North Carolina to arrive in late 1799. His story as a clockmaker in frontier America from 1800 to 1835 is well documented by the author from Moravian records. It seems that Mr. Eberhardt, the clockmaker, had one weakness, he drank to excess resulting in wife-beating and an inability to control his finances. Because of this, the officials in the Moravian settlement were constantly considering his conduct, examining his financial situation and putting him on and off what we today would term probation. These Moravian records exist and form half the facts concerning Eberhardt. The second half of the facts come from the clocks Eberhardt made. When reading this book one has to remember that the author wrote it in the mid-1970's when much of the information we now have about white painted dials was not available. In fact the author states that he is not aware of how to date the clocks from the features on the dials. Nevertheless, the author does an excellent job and his attribution of dates to 35 of Eberhardt's clocks are nearly flaw-less. The author also does an excellent job in describing how a clockmaker functions in the first half of the 1800's. What parts did the "maker" purchase from parts houses in Philadelphia that were termed "Birmingham goods" meaning they were made in Birmingham, England? These parts included dials, hands, cast brass movement plates and wheel blanks. The clockmakers task was to turn these purchased parts into a working clock. The cases for Eberhardt's clock movements were made by skilled cabinetmakers in Salem's Moravian furniture shops."--Arlington Books ; VG. Book.

Much of what we know about cranes in the UK was contained in John's memory and notebooks. The co-author is Chris Durdin from Honeyguide Wildlife Holidays and for many years on the RSPB's staff.
