Powell (possibly William Thomas Rowland Powell, 1814-1878, a leader in the of the County of Cardigan). Christoph Helwig, 1581-1617 was a German chronologist and historian, theologian and linguist. This work, first published in 1609, offers an chronology of history beginning with Creation and the creation of Adam. Biographical notes to "chart-like" page. Helwig covers church history, use of astrology in pagan and religious circles, Greek, Roman, and Jewish histories, the churn of Turkish and Ottoman power, importance of the Papacy, and the book provides an extensive index.

First English edition which was originally written in Latin and published in 1609 by Nicolaus Hampel. Christoph Helvig (1581 1617) was a German chronologist and historian, theologian and linguist. Helvig was born at Sprendlingen. In chronology he generally was a follower of Joseph Scaliger. He is mentioned by Sir Thomas Browne, and John Locke. He remained an authority cited well into the eighteenth century; Samuel Johnson's General Plan of Education mentions Helvicus. Bookplate for T Gaisford to the front paste down. Condition Report Externally Spine fair condition gilt titles to a red label, a gilt stork label to the base of the spine, five raised bands, worn with loss to the top and base of the spines and lower joints. Joints fair condition rubbed and worn, split to the front joint almost entirely, rear joint split to the first compartment and bottom two compartments. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards good condition full dark calf boards with marks and wear. Page edges good condition top edges darkened, all other edges spotted red. See above and photos. Paste downs good condition both paste downs tanned, book plate for T Gaisford to the front paste down.
