Volume 2, (published 1972) is taken from the 1869 edition. These are "informal vignettes," collected from the author's newspaper columns appearing in the "Portsmouth Journal of Literature and Politics," between 1840 and 1860. The author shared his passion for Portsmouth's splendid old houses, dating from colonial to Federalist times, and stories of the people who lived in them. Considered a classic of local history of a town who's port rivaled Boston and New York in the mid-nineteenth century. Includes many vintage photos, and folding pocket maps. Indexed.
