Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the field evaluation of insecticides for the control of the alfalfa weevil in Maryland from 1962 to 1966. Faced with a growing resistance of the alfalfa weevil to heptachlor, the author tested various insecticides to find more effective chemical protection for the crop in early spring. The author provides a detailed account of the methods used, the results obtained, and the challenges encountered in the search for effective weevil control. The book offers valuable insights into the complexities of pest control, the evolution of insect resistance, and the importance of ongoing research in agricultural practices. It highlights the need for a multifaceted approach to pest management, combining chemical control with other strategies such as cultural practices and biological control. By documenting the challenges and successes of this particular study, this book contributes to the broader understanding of insect pest management and the development of sustainable agricultural practices. William More Gabb (1839-1878) described 37 recent invertebrate species: 3 Cnidaria, 34 Mollusca (5 Cephalopoda, 3 Bivalvia, and 26 Gastropoda) and 2 Recent gastropod genera. This paper lists the taxa, records where the type material is deposited, and indicates the current taxonomic status. 12 pp., gr. 8. …

As a much needed bibliographic tool, an annotated catalog is given of the symposia and workshops that have been held at malacological and generalist meetings over the past six decades, together with their resulting publications. Particularly detailed emphasis is given to the meetings of Unitas Malacologica, the American Malacological Union, and the Western Society of Malacologists. 20 pp., 4.…

Some 1,048 names at the rank of subtribe, tribe, subfamily, family and superfamily have been proposed for Recent and fossil bivalves. All names are listed in a nomenclator giving full bibliographic reference, date of publication, type genus, and their nomenclatural availability and validity under the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Another 274 names, established for categories above the family-group are listed separately. A working classification attempts to group all bivalve family-group names into a single system based on current hypotheses of relations and synonymies. At several rank levels, the groups are given in alphabetical rather than some assumed phylogenetic arrangement, reflecting current uncertainties and conflicting results from anatomical, molecular, and fossil data. Altogether, the classification recognizes as valid a total of 324 families, of which 214 are known exclusively as fossils and 110 occur in the Recent with or without a fossil record. 184 pp., br. 4.…

This book is a comprehensive guide to the identification of bivalve mollusks in the Per?-Chile Province. Nearly 240 species are detailed, and to facilitate its use, we have provided a series of to help the reader in making identifications. For the bivalve identification novice, we recommend beginning with an understanding of common bivalve morphological features found in the Introduction . Bivalve vocabulary is further defined in the Glossary . Once the basic morphological terms are understood, the Key to the Superfamilies will give the reader an opportunity to place a specimen in a general taxonomic group. It should be noted that this key, and all keys in this book, were written considering full size (adult) characteristics. Many superfamily sections begin with a short key to its contained families. A family containing more than one species have a Species Characteristics Table with images that will help readers separate a particular species of that family from others in the Per?-Chile Province. Readers can confirm their preliminary identification by considering the Species Descriptions? and Illustrations for every species. Within the species accounts are details about the known geographic and depth distributions. We have also included a maximum size for the species.
