Overall a very good but obviously used copy The book has no publishing date, and 1897 is…taken from Worlcat. The book is part of "Nicholson's Home Library Series". "Margaret Catchpole (14 March 1762 - 13 May 1819) was an English adventuress, chronicler and criminal. Born in Suffolk, she worked as a servant in various houses before being convicted of stealing a horse and later escaping from Ipswich Gaol. Following her capture she was transported to Australia. Her entry in the Australian Dictionary of Biography describes her as one of the few true convict chroniclers with an excellent memory and a gift for recording events.Rev. Richard Cobbold (son of her former employers) made Catchpole the subject of a novel, The History of Margaret Catchpole (London, 1845), which has often been reprinted. The author claims that "the public may depend upon the truth of the main features of this narrative" however some discrepancies have since come to light . (Wikipedia).

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. London: Henry Colburn, Publisher, Three Volumes, complete, 1847 First Edition. Three Volumes in half leather binding, with gilt titles to red and black labels, calf spine and quarters with cloth boards. Richard Cobbold (1797 1877) was a British writer. Richard Cobbold was born in 1797 in th…e Suffolk town of Ipswich, to John and the poet and writer Elizabeth (née Knipe) Cobbold. The Cobbolds were a large and affluent family who made their money from the brewing industry. Their name lives on in Ipswich in the firm of Tolly Cobbold. Educated at Caius College, Cambridge, Cobbold entered the church, starting at St Mary Le Tower in Ipswich before moving to Wortham in 1825 with his wife and three sons. He remained there until his death on 5 January 1877. Cobbold is best known as the author of the History of Margaret Catchpole, a novel based on the romantic adventures of a woman living in the neighbourhood of Ipswich, in whom Cobbold's father had taken a kindly interest. For the copyright of this book he is said to have received £1,000. However Cobbold did not make much money by his other literary ventures, which were mostly undertaken for charitable purposes. Thus his account of Mary Ann Wellington brought in no less than £600, much of it in small gifts, for the subject of the book, who was afterwards placed in an almshouse by Cobbold's exertions.
