loose_leaf. Zustand: Very Good. Yale Collection of Western Americana, 1981. In very good condition. Reproduction of a single sheet real estate promotion from the late 1860's to early 1870's produced by Geo. W. Smith & Co., general real estate agents, Houston, Texas. One of 400 unnumbered copies reprinted at Christmas, 1981, for friends of the Yale Collection of Western Americana. [From back side] From Moses Austin to modern corporations, Texas has attracted Northerners, Easterners and Southerners seeking a second chance or a promising investment. In 1869 an unusual group of Union and Confederate veterans joined to promote the region in language which sounds familiar today. George W. Smith was appointed an Associate Justice of the Texas Supreme Court in 1866. Although military authorities removed him as an impediment to reconstruction, Smith's company obtained the endorsements of a variety of Radical Reconstructionists and former Confederate sympathizers. A native Floridian, E.J. Davis grew up in Texas. Denied election to the state's Secession Convention, he joined the Union Army. Elected Governor in 1869, he oversaw radical reconstruction in the state. Among his political allies was William T Clark. Born in Norwalk, Connecticut, Clark served in Texas during the Civil War as a Brevet Brigadier General in the Iowa Regiment. Afterwards he opened a bank in Galveston and organized local blacks. Elected to Congress in 1869, he was known as "a notorious carpetbagger." That real estate promotions overcame partisan politics in the 19th century as effectively as they do today is reflected in the support of T.W. House. The father of Col. Edward House, T.W. moved to Texas from England in the late 1830s. He became one of Houston's leading bankers, merchants and promoters. A Confederate supplier during the war, he never allowed politics to interfere with the development of Houston. Judge William Alexander was born in Kentucky and moved to Texas in 1846 after completing Yale Law School. He served as the state's Attorney General from 1865 till he resigned in 1867 and from 1870 through 1873.At a time when Sun Belt promotions of a different sort have drawn new immigrants to Houston, 400 copies of the Smith Company's announcement have been reprinted at Christmas, 1981 for friends of the Yale Collection of Western Americana.…

Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. 1st Edition. As new condition brown boards, maroon cloth spine and gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition photographic dust jacket. Includes Author Dedication; Foreword by David M. Emmons; Preface; Introduction; Acknowledgments; Notes and Suggested Readings; Index and About the Author. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs and maps. "In The Forgotten Founders Stewart Udall enriches our understanding of the conquest of the West. His book is a valuable antidote to the Hollywoodization of the westward movement. And it is a stirring tribute to the plain men and women who worked together to build schools and churches and dams and irrigation canals, thereby laying the foundation for a democratic order." - Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. "In this important new book, former secretary of the interior Stewart Udall reminds us of a more realistic Old West than the violence-packed one that the popular media have continued to give us. Himself the son of Arizona pioneers, Udall has wrtten eloquently in behalf of the everyday pioneer settlers and their families who went west.and with hard work and small complaint did the difficult work of opening up the vast western country." - Alvin M. Josephy, Jr. "For half a century, Stewart Udall had been a leading innovator of land conservation in the West. With this great book, he asks us to shed the still-dominant myths of the Wild West that keep us from seeing these lands for what they are. He returns us to the deeper values of the region's communities that can guide us into honoring the uniqueness of the intermountain West and its culture." - Gary Nabhan. "For many people, the "Wild West" popularized in movies and pulp novels - a land of intrepid explorers and traders, warlike natives, greedy gold seekers, and trigger-happy gunslingers - has become the true history of the region. The story of the West's settlement is a singular chapter of history, but not, according to native westerner and former U.S. secretary of the interior Stewart Udall, for the reasons filmmakers and novelists would have us believe. In The Forgotten Founders, Udall draws on his extensive knowledge of and experience in the American West to make a compelling case that the key players in early western development were instead the many families who established communities there, often traveling great distances and enduring bitter hardships to do so. He offers a fascinating and wide-ranging view of western history and those who have written about it, challenging conventional wisdom on subjects ranging from Indian societies and Manifest Destiny to the importance of eastern capital and religion's role in westward settlement. Udall argues that the overblown attention given to a Wild West that was "won" distorts our sense of the past and undermines our sense of the present. It glosses over the values and accomplishments of the men and women of the pre-railroad age who came, camped, settled, and stayed. Native peoples, Franciscan friars, Mormon, Protestant, and Catholic pioneers - these and others like them were, in Udall's view, the true settlers, and their goals are as important today as they were centuries ago: "amity, not conquest; stability, not strife; conservation, not waste; restraint, not aggression." The Forgotten Founders offers a provocative look at an important era, rescuing the Old West and its pioneers from the margins of history where latter-day mythmakers have dumped them. For anyone interested in the authentic history of the American West, this is an important and exciting work." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Willson, Bridhid (jacket design); Denver Public Library Western History Collection (jacket photo) (illustrator). …

Fredette (1924-2022) was a distinguished U.S. Air Force officer and historian, and the official biographer of Charles A. Lindbergh. In 1970, after his retirement, Col. Fredette contacted Lindbergh about his Medal of Honor, which he received in 1928 from President Coolidge, in honor of his historic flight. The two aviators met for lunch in Washington, D.C., and began discussions about writing an official biography. Lindbergh agreed and opened his private papers to Fredette, which were held at Yale University. After Lindbergh's death in 1974, Anne Morrow Lindbergh authorized Fredette to continue his writing, but after a dispute with his publisher, a book was never released. Fredette was the author of The Sky on Fire: The First Battle of Britain 1917-1918, which provides a detailed account of the German air raids over London and the defense mounted by the British Royal Flying Corps. A Military History of the Western World by British military historian John F.C. Fuller, from the private collection of Charles Lindbergh. This set was a gift from Lindbergh to his official biographer, Lt. Colonel Raymond H. Fredette. (illustrator). Signed.…
