He was active in Alexandria during the…reign of Ptolemy I (323?283 BC). His Elements is one of the most influential works in the history of mathematics, serving as the main textbook for teaching mathematics (especially geometry) from the time of its publication until the late 19th or early 20th century. In the Elements, Euclid deduced the theorems of what is now called Euclidean geometry from a small set of axioms. Euclid also wrote works on perspective, conic sections, spherical geometry, number theory, and mathematical rigour.? The Italian Federico Commandino (1509?1575) "studied at Padua and at Ferrara, where he received his doctorate in medicine. He was most famous for his central role as translator of works of ancient mathematicians. In this, his sources were primarily written in Greek and secondarily in Arabic, while his translations were primarily in Latin and secondarily in Italian. He was responsible for the publication of many treatises of Archimedes. He also translated the works of Aristarchus of Samos (On the sizes and distances of the Sun and the Moon), Pappus of Alexandria (Mathematical collection), Hero of Alexandria (Pneumatics), Ptolemy of Alexandria (Planisphere and Analemma), Apollonius of Perga (Conics) and Euclid of Alexandria (Elements). The first book printed in Urbino in the 16th century, and only the fourth overall. Urbino's presses lagged behind those of other Italian cities, due in part to Duke Federico's predilection for manuscripts. It seems Federico Commandino, the foremost mathematician of the generation before Galileo, had a press set up in his house. He hired in a printer, Domenico Frisolino, and there he published his translation into Italian of Euclid, based on his own Latin translation of 1572. Commandino died just as the sheets were coming off the press. His brother-in-law hastily attached a dedicatory letter (to Francesco Maria II della Rovere) explaining that Commandino wanted the text to be available to "all who are served by mathematics," that is, even those who do not understand classical languages. Euclid's text is glossed by Commandino's running commentary, and illustrated with figures.

First separate edition and first edition of Commandino's commentary of Ptolemy's Planisphaerium, the original Greek text of which is no longer extant. Octavo, two volumes bound into one in eighteenth century vellum, all edges speckled red, Aldine device on both titles and both final pages, woodcut initials, numerous woodcut diag…rams. The Ptolemaei is printed in Roman type and the Planisphaerium in Italics; examples from the Aldine Press in Roman type are scarce as the press's founder, Aldus Manutius, invented the Italic type which he used almost exclusively. The Aldine press was also the first toÂissue printed books in the small octavo size. After Aldusâ death in 1515 the press was continued by his wife, Maria and her father, Andrea Torresani, until his son, Paulus Manutius (1512â"1574) assumed management in 1534. It is from this era that most, if not all, of the works from his press bear the imprint In Aedibus Haeredum Aldi et Andrea Asulani Soceri. In near fine condition with minor marginal dampstaining to a few pages. Exceptionally rare and desirable. Originally written in Ancient Greek, Ptolemy's 12th century Planisphaerium was one of the major scientific works that survived from antiquity in Arabic translation. An exploration of the mathematics of mapping figures inscribed in the celestial sphere, the Planisphaerium attracted interest because stereographic projection was the mathematical basis of the plane astrolabe, an instrument which was widely used in the medieval Islamic world. This Latin version, along with Jordanus de Nemore's work on the same topic, was first printed in Basel in 1536. The editor of the present volume, Federico Commandino, was a physician to the Duke of Urbino at his household in Rome, and the author of several translations of ancient Greek mathematical treatises and commentaries published in the early 16th century. In working with Ptolemy's stereographic projection of the celestial sphere on a plane with the south celestial pole at the center, Commandino noticed that conic sections could be considered sections in visual cones or perspective images. This inspired him to include in his work a study of perspective, which occupies the majority of his commentary and represents one of the earliest mathematical formulations of a method already widely employed by artists (Adams P2242; Censimento 16; CNCE 28281; Renouard 1558/4; Ahmanson-Murphy/UCLA 449; Houzeau & Lancaster 769; Honeyman 2557; Riccardi I, 360, 1).

Grandi capilettera figurati e numerosissime incisioni geometriche incise in legno nel testo. Il volume inizia curiosamente con la seconda parte, il commentario, così che la dedica dell?opera al Cardinale Ranuccio Farnese con cui si apre la prima parte, l?edizione di Tolomeo, si trova al centro del volume, segno evidente che per l?antico proprietario erano di maggior importanza i commenti del Commandino. Inutile ricordare che Ranuccio Farnese fu mecenate del Commandino, ed ebbe fra i suoi segretari Giovanni Della Casa ed Annibal Caro, era inoltre fratello di Vittoria Farnese, moglie in seconde nozze di Guidobaldo II della Rovere, duca di Urbino, dunque zio di Francesco Maria II della Rovere, anch?egli mecenate del Commandino. Fra Cinque e Seicento il Ducato di Urbino è sede di una scuola scientifica di importanza europea, una sorta di Umanesimo matematico, come è stato definito, che vede in Federico Commandino uno dei suoi maggiori esponenti, naturale conseguenza degli stimoli che la città aveva saputo dare nella seconda metà del secolo precedente quando Federico da Montefeltro vi aveva portato Luciano Laurana, Francesco di Giorgio Martini, Piero della Francesca. Il Commandino è una delle figure centrali nel processo di diffusione della cultura greca ed orientale che iniziato appunto nel secolo precedente, con il recupero dei testi e la loro traduzione, porrà le basi della per la nascita della scienza così come la intendiamo, nel secolo seguente.La stessa formazione di Federico Commandino, che aveva studiato greco e latino con Giacomo Torelli da Fano, matematica con Gian Pietro de? Grassi gli fornì le basi che gli permisero di divenire traduttore e commentatore di opere di matematica e geometria antiche. Il de?Grassi lo portò con sé a Roma al seguito del Cardinale Niccolò Ridolfi, bibliofilo, appassionato di matematica e ricercatore di manoscritti, dove entrò in contatto con quell?ambiente di studiosi, ed eruditi che cercavano le opere antiche per recuperarne il sapere disperso durante il medioevo.Divenuto a Roma cameriere segreto del Papa Clemente VII, alla sua morte, andò a Padova dove studiò filosofia e medicina, entrando nel 1546 al servizio di Guidobaldo Della Rovere, duca di Urbino che seguì come medico personale e grazie al quale conobbe il Cardinale Ranuccio Farnese che ne era il cognato, avendone sposato in seconde nozze la sorella Vittoria Farnese, madre di Francesco Maria (1549-1621), cui il libro è dedicato.Nel periodo urbinate la sua attività di traduttore e commentatore raggiunse l?apice nel 1572, tre anni prima della morte, quando tradusse e commentò, su incarico di Francesco Maria II, gli Euclides Elementorum libri X. Morì ad Urbino dove era nato nel 1509.Fra i suoi discepoli urbinati, vanno ricordati Guidobaldo Del Monte che fu in corrispondenza ed amicizia con Galileo Galilei e che divenne anch?egli traduttore e commentatore di opere antiche, Torquato Tasso e naturalmente lo stesso futuro duca Francesco Maria II della Rovere.Questi, alla morte del padre Guidobaldo, appena venticinquenne, gli successe nella reggenza del ducato che tenne fino al 1621 quando lo lasciò al figlio Federico Guidobaldo, avuto in seconde nozze dalla cugina Livia della Rovere. Alla sua improvvisa morte, due anni dopo, Francesco Maria dovette tornare ad assumere le redini del ducato che infine, nel 1625 cedette allo Stato Pontificio ritirandosi a vita privata e allo studio. Nel 1607 Francesco Maria aveva trasferito a Casteldurante, oggi Urbania dove amava ritirarsi, la sua enorme raccolta di libri a stampa ? quella dei manoscritti era invece rimasta nella ?Libraria vecchia? ad Urbino - che trattavano delle acquisizioni più moderne in ogni scienza ed arte, assieme alle conoscenze degli ?antichi? Nel 1666 Alessandro VII Chigi, anch?egli studioso e bibliofilo decise di trasferire la donazione degli oltre 13.000 volumi che il duca aveva lasciato ai Chierici Minori Regolari del SS.mo Crocefisso, i Caracciolini, di Casteldurante per ?benefitio publico?, a Roma, presso il Palazzo della Sapienza, e ora costituiscono uno dei nuclei più importanti della Biblioteca Alessandrina.
