The definitive edition of the great early Dutch voyages of exploration. This collection of voyages, many undertaken by the Dutch East India Company (VOC), ranks as a record of some of the most important mercantile adventures in the history of European expansion. Complete sets are rarely found today, many having being split into their constituent parts. This finely illustrated work is one of the great voyage collections and ranks alongside those of Hakluyt and Purchas. It includes accounts of all the voyages on which the Duyfken, captained by William Jansz, sailed, of great importance as it was the Duyfken which would make the first sighting of the Australian coast. This is the preferred edition of the work (two editions, far less complete, had previously appeared), with a preface by Commelin, a summary of pre-1631 Dutch voyages, and is superbly illustrated with maps, charts, views of the early settlements, indigenous people, animals, and natural history subjects. 2 volumes. The most important collection of voyages to the North, around the world and to the East Indies made by the Dutch between 1595 and 1640, here bound in two volumes. It is one of the most valuable collections of voyages ever made in any language. All these journals are either reprinted with slight variations from the original editions or from autograph manuscripts placed at the disposal of the editor, or from personal narratives. The compiler is the learned Isaac Commelin (1598-1676), bookbinder and well-known citizen of Amsterdam. The vast mass of plates and maps was either excellently copied from the original editions or from the autograph maps of the navigators.The collection contains 21 voyages, 12 of them published here for the first time, namely: the voyages to the East Indies by Pieter Both, Jac. van Neck, Steven vander Hagen, Wolphert Hermansz, Van Warwijck & De Weert, Corn. Matelief, Paul van Caerden, Wybrant Schram, H. Hagenaer and the voyages to the East Indies, China and the Philippines by P. Verhoeven.
