Greek tragedy and comedy represent two of the most important legacies of ancient Greek culture, and have been influential ever since their development in the 6th and 5th centuries BC. This book investigates the specific role of boys in these ancient Greek plays, based on the surviving works of the three great Athenian tragedians, Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. It examines the reasons why the inclusion of boys was important to playwrights, and the role of boys not only in the plots but also in the actual staging and performance of ancient Greek plays. The author considers what these plays can tell us about the lives and experiences of boys in ancient Greece, and in what ways boys differed from other types of characters in ancient Greek plays. The book takes a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on evidence from literary texts, visual art, and historical sources. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
