Following established precedents, no distinction is drawn between testimonia and fragmenta;instead, a single consecutive numbering system is adopted for the various reliquiae. These are drawn from sources in Latin and Greek, as well as in Syriac, Arabic, and Armenian. Passages known from oriental languages are presentedhere in a Latin back-translation, specially prepared for this edition. Each entry includes a pre-apparatus (wherever applicable) and a selective but meticulous apparatus criticus. Che varianti fonologico-morfologiche tendano a raggrupparsi uniformemente in diverse sezioni dell'opera è un fatto non raro nella tradizione erodotea, forse connesso ad antiche divisioni in rotoli. E' da notare per altro che, all'interno dell'VIII libro, anche la stirps Romana ha talora il "normale" voitheïn, e anche tenendo conto della tradizione indiretta di cui subito diremo, rimane difficile, se non impossibile, decidere se: a) Erodoto ha scritto sempre voitheïn, e ne sono rimaste tracce scampate alla normalizzazione; b) Erodoto ha variato nell'uso egli stesso; c) una recensione "ionizzante" di età posteriore ha introdotto più o meno ampiamente un voitheïn artificiale, o tratto da una variante di Ionico diversa da quella erodotea, ma tale "innovazione" non ha avuto molta fortuna nella nostra tradizione manoscritta. / Zusammenfassung: Nach einer Analyse der ionischen Form votheïn = att. voitheïn und ihrer Belege bei den ionischen Schriftstellern und den Lexikographen zeigt der Verfasser, daß die Cyrill-Glosse vothéontas:voithoúntas (>Hesych. B 1364 L.) wahrscheinlich auf den von Cyrill, adv. lui. I 9, p. 124 B.-E. auf geführten Text von Abydenus sich bezieht. Die These ist um so glaubwürdiger, weil - anhand weiteren Entsprechungen - Cyrills adversus lulianum öfters als Quelle von den Verfassern des Cyrill-Lexikons benutzt worden zu sein scheint. In effetti quanti a proposito del singolo fanno consistere la vita felice nelle ricchezze, costoro ritengono beato uno stato nella sua totalità se è ricco; quanti pregiano sopra ogni cosa la vita tirannica, costoro dovranno ammettere che lo stato più felice è quello che ha il più grande dominio; chi approva un individuo per la virtù, dirà che più felice è lo stato che è più morale» (1324 a 7-13). C., furono ordinati e pubblicati nel 1974 da Sergio Daris, che vi riconobbe brani di un unico testo convenzionalmente definito «encomio di Atene». Se il contesto del fr. 1 restava oscuro alleditore, nel fr. 2 era evidente il riferimento alla spedizione di Serse; nel fr. 3, pur assai lacunoso, si legge ancora il nome di Salamina; il fr. 4, dopo una menzione delle Termopili, contiene un elogio di Temistocle; mentre nel fr. 5 + 6 leditore riconosceva acutamente il racconto di alcuni eventi del 479 ben noti da Erodoto 8, 140-144 e 9, 7-10, vale a dire le ambascerie di Alessandro di Macedonia e degli Spartani ad Atene e lambasceria ateniese che mirava a sollecitare Sparta alla mobilitazione. Merito probabilmente del fatto che, nella Francia del 700, la cultura classica sembra arrivare a rivestire, attraverso la riproposizione giacobina dei modelli politici antichi, un ruolo rivoluzionario e di avanguardia che assai raramente le è spettato prima e dopo, e che non può non esercitare un notevole fascino su una scienza antichistica che, oggi più che mai, si interroga sulla propria funzione e i propri scopi. Che i modelli classici avessero giocato un qualche ruolo nellelaborazione dell'ideologia rivoluzionaria non è del resto una scoperta recente; lo stretto nesso tra classicismo e rivoluzione, attraverso lesaltazione del modello di città antica libera ed egualitaria, fu polemicamente individuato già dai primi critici del giacobinismo e degli eccessi della rivoluzione, dai termidoriani ai liberali di primo '800, come mostra lopera di Volney o di Benjamin Constant.
