André Victor Cornil (1837-1908) fut médecin des hôpitaux et professeur d'anatomie pathologique à la Faculté de médecine de Paris. Il fut l'élève du célèbre pathologiste allemand Virchow, pendant quelques mois, et fut le collaborateur de Charcot qui dira de lui : "Il a été mon maître en histologie." Il fut membre de l'Académie de Médecine. Victor Cornil, physician and microscopist, who was influenced in his microscopical work by Broca and Verneuil, recalled that when he defended his doctoral thesis in 1864 - a full ten years after the turning point in the history of medical microscopy - that his microscopical work was met with suspicion, even ridicule, by his examining committee: 'When I passed my doctoral thesis in 1864 on the histology of nephritis, one of my judges, very kindly in other respects, said to me, You have written an infinitely meritorious work, sir, but what the devil good does it serve? Have you found under your microscope the means of curing albuminuria? 'Cornil's response shows that the instrument was primarily a diagnostic tool, but emphasizes the relationship of diagnosis to therapy and suggests the importance of a good understanding of anatomy and physiology for the practicing physician who would tret patients with care.".…
