Der zunächst zum Expressionsimus zu zählende Autor (1894-1960), der mit einigen seiner Werke, u.a. den Romanen "Trieb" und "Bordell" nicht nur in bürgerlichen oder kirchlichen Kreisen auf Ablehnung stieß, schaftte es trotz Verbot seiner Bücher und einjähriger Schutzhaft auch im NS-Staat als Autor, Redakteur und Dramaturg tätig zu sein. Auf die Liste des unerwünschten Schriftums kam nicht zuletzt auch sein 1929 entstandenes und Aufsehen erregendes, gegen den Antisemitismus gerichtetes, Schauspiel "Trojaner", das er aber nach 1933 kurzerhand zu dem durchaus NS-konformen Roman "Hellmann der Führer" umschrieb, der dann 1946 wiederum durch die sowjetische Besatzungsmacht verboten wurde.
