Als Gründungsjahr gilt zum einen 1457 (Georg von Podiebrads Übergabe des Guts Kunwald an die Petr-Chelcický-Brüder), zum anderen 1727 (Ausarbeitung der Statuten für die Glaubensflüchtlinge in der Siedlung Herrnhut durch Zinzendorf). // . Infolge der Gegenreformation Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts kamen ab 1722 Böhmische Brüder überwiegend aus Mähren auf das Gut von Nikolaus Ludwig Graf von Zinzendorf (1700-1760) im Oberlausitzer Ort Berthelsdorf. Außerhalb des Dorfes gründeten sie unter Führung von Christian David die Siedlung Herrnhut. Graf Zinzendorf, der sich dort 1725-27 ein auch als "Herrschaftshaus" bezeichnetes Palais errichtet hatte, musste bald Konflikte schlichten, die zwischen dem lutherischen Ortspfarrer Johann Andreas Rothe und den Siedlern ausgebrochen waren. Gemeinsame Einsicht zur Busse, Umkehr, Versöhnung und eine Abendmahlsfeier am 12. August 1727 beschloss die zweite Gründungsphase der Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine. Zinzendorf, Rothe und David arbeiteten danach die sogenannten Herrnhuter Statuten aus, in denen die rechtlichen und wirtschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen für die Siedlung, aber auch die geistlichen Regelungen für die neue Gemeinschaft festgelegt wurden. Im Februar 1728 versammelten sich 150 Brüder und Schwestern auf dem ersten sogenannten Gemeintag, um sich mit Thema der weltweiten Mission auseinanderzusetzen. Als Folge wurde eine Art Missionsschule eingerichtet, die vier Räume umfasste und für 26 unverheiratete junge Männer diente, die nach der Alltagsarbeit in Sprache, Schrift und Medizin ausgebildet wurden. Schon in den nächsten Jahren entschloss sich die Gemeinschaft, ihren neu gestärkten Glauben weltweit zu verkündigen. Dazu wurde Kontakt mit dem dänischen Königshaus aufgenommen; 1732/33 wurden die ersten Missionare nach Saint Thomas in der Karibik (Neu-Herrnhut) und nach Grönland (Noorliit) ausgesandt. 1736 kam es zur Verbannung Zinzendorfs aus dem Kurfürstentum Sachsen, da seine Brüdergemeine der lutherischen Orthodoxie z.
