Catalogue of an exhibition of 65 ceramic objects and related paintings and woodblock prints, on loan from major private collections and held at the China Institute Gallery in 1995. In the 17th century, during the fall of the Ming and the rise of the Qing Dynasty, patronage of the kilns at Jingdezhen shifted from the Imperial court to the scholar-official and merchant classes; thus decoration on the kiln porcelain production reflected, for awhile, the tastes of this elite group. At the end of the century, the Manchu court again resumed Imperial patronage and Jingdezhen reverted back to the use of motifs favoured by the court. The present exhibition examines the unique products of this interim period. Text in English with Chinese summary.
