Regtuit gaat te keer tegen belastingen en bezuinigingen, tegen de stoom die de mensen het brood uit de mond stoot, tegen koning Willem I. Achter de acht brieven volgt een verzameling reacties, alle onder pseudoniem. In de bijgebonden 'Brief van Piet Opregt', die was verschenen na de vierde brief van Jan Regtuit, heet 'd Ancona een vuige lasteraar, die zich achter het anonym verbergt, om zoo met meerdere veiligheid zijn zwadder uit te spuwen.
