First Edition. in a contemporary armorial binding of olive morocco, triple filet border to both covers around central arms, gilt, the spine gilt in compartments, second compartment lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges, pink silk marker, with the early ownership inscription ?Ex Bibliotheca D. Crozat? and the arms of the duchesse de Gramont gilt on both covers. 8vo (160 x 100 mm), pp. [viii], 602 (ie, 604, pp. 334-335 repeated), [3], collating a4, A-PP8, title page engraved by Leon Gaultier, paper a little browned throughout, with some ink staining and light wear, A scarce classically-inspired ?roman galant? by the Poitiers-born soldier and novelist, Louis Moreau du Bail, and an early example of the genre. Du Bail?s prolific output, though not didactic, was intended as an inspirational and moral celebration of romantic love. About half of his thirteen known novels, including the present, have a classical inspiration, and many of these are notable for their strong heroines. In this novel, the heroine is modelled on the fictitious illegitimate daughter of King Henry III of France and tells the story of her two marriages, the betrayal by her second husband and her subsequent ruin, captivity and escape from execution. Not much is known about Du Bail, except that he was a soldier and a novelist: ?Un écuyer poitevin de confession catholique, né certainement avant 1600, qui connut la vie militaire et a captivité: telles sont les maigres indications que nous pouvons ramasser? (Alain Niderst). This is the sixth of his known thirteen novels, which were published between 1622 and 1646. ?[Son] inspiration est toujours élévée. Il veut porter le lecteur au repentir, à la pénitence, à la retraite? (Joseph Salvat in Dictionnaire des Lettres Françaises, XVII Siècle, 401). This is a stunning copy from the libraries of the marquis de Tugny and, later, the duchesse de Gramont, bibliophile and patron of the arts whose library of some 3,000 volumes was dispersed during the French Revolution after she was guillotined. (Ernest Quentin-Bauchart). Provenance: 1. Joseph-Antoine Crozat, marquis de Tugny (1696-1751), this work no. 2426 in his catalogue and bearing his inscription, ?Ex Bibliotheca D. Crozat?, on the verso of the title-page. 2. Béatrix de Choiseul-Stainville, duchesse de Gramont (1730-1794), with her arms on the binding. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 4to (298 x 241mm). 313, 77pp. [3] index. Double-page engraved frontispieces, to left, portrait of Antoine Hamilton and right, building of Somer Hill House in Turnbridge Wells. 78 engraved plates from portraits in the royal collections at Windsor and elsewhere. Contemporary red straight-grain morocco, ruled in gilt, gilt doublures, gilt edges; (occasionally foxed, slight offsetting from plates; very slight edgewear). Ex-libris of the Earl of Minto, his arms and motto Credunt quod vident (seeing is believing) to plate on front pastedown. Large paper-copy of this edition of a popular account containing amorous intrigue at the English court of Charles II. The work was written between 1704 and 1710 by Antoine Hamilton; Irish author and brother-in-law to the Comte de Gramont. It was first published anonymously in 1713 (apparently without Hamilton's knowledge) under the rubric of Cologne, although it was really printed in the Netherlands. Upwards of thirty editions and translations have since appeared, the best of the French being Renouard's (1812). The Mémoires du Comte de Grammont have been acknowledged to be a masterpiece of French literature; Voltaire went so far as to say that Hamilton was the first to discover the essential genius of the French language. The memoir was said to have been written at Gramont's dictation, but it is very evident that Hamilton's influence is the most considerable. Even so, at the end of the first chapter, Hamilton wrote "To himself we owe these Memoirs since I only hold the pen." When the Mémoires were finished it is said that Gramont sold the manuscript for 1500 francs; and kept most of the money himself. Fontenelle, then censor of the press, refused to license the book for it contained some ruthless expositions of court-life. But Gramont himself appealed to the chancellor and the prohibition was removed. Gramont died on 10 January 1707, and the Mémoires appeared six years later. The work remains a masterpiece of style and of witty portraiture. Cohen-de Ricci 472; Gay-Lemonnyer III, 128 ("la plus belle édition et la plus curieuse par ses notes"); Tchemerzine (1977) III, 657. …

One letterpress title-page. 133 engraved text leaves, a contents leaf at the end of volume one, and publisher's catalogue at end of volume II, 216 fine engraved plates, including 8 folding, of which 153 are maps with original hand-colour in outline, 57 are views, and 6 diagrams or illustrations of instruments (without Pastoureau plates 49, 67, and 151, but with additional maps of Bourges, Cours de la Sare, Scandinavian countries, the duchy of Milan, the borders of Miland and Cremona, Naples, some light browning, occasional marginal waterstains occasionally affecting the image in the second volume, small tear to outer corner of map of "la Rochelle" without loss, upper right-hand corner of "environs de namur" shaved, a few other small marginal tears to gutters, some repaired). Contemporary mottled calf, and contemporary speckled calf, gilt (a bit scuffed, front free endpaper of "Suite" torn with loss); preserved in two green clamshell boxes). Provenance: with the near contemporary ownership inscription of Lavalette de Montagneux on the recto of the first blank of each volume, plates numbered in manuscript, and alphabetical indices in manuscript at the end of each volume; the "Suite" inscribed "Pour / Monsieur Jordan / conseiler du Roy, Fer / A Bar-le-Duc" on the verso of the table of contents. First edition, second issue, with the additional "Suite" of plates. Possibly inscribed by a member of the publisher's family to Camille Jordan (1771 - 1821), who was ennobled and named a councillor of state to Louis XVIII at Bar-le-Duc. Jordan was a well-travelled politician, having been born in Lyons which fell to republican forces in 1793, he fled to Switzerland, and from there travelled to England. On the restitution in 1814 he returned to France. Issued in six annual parts from 1700-1705, the maps are based on the new observations of the Academie des Sciences, and with the assistance of Philipe de la Hire. The "Suite" consists mostly of works dated 1714-1716, with two duplicates from the first volume with changed dates, consisting of the maps of Paris (1701, now 1705) and Neuchatel (1699, now 1705). A geographic encyclopedia of images and a celebration of the French Empire under the Sun King, with maps of French possessions in the western hemisphere, detailed views of the grand waterworks at Marly, views of the great palaces and chateaux, views and plans of the Paris Observatory, and samples of military architecture. Maps related to America in the first volume include, the two world maps, Amerique, Canada, Mouth of the Mississippi, California and New Mexico, New Spain, Antilles, Terra Firma Peru, Cartegena, Chile, Straits of Magellan; those in the "Suite" are Jamaica, Santo Domingo, and Mexico city. Maps related to Asia, and the Indian and Pacific Oceans include Asie, East Indies, East Asia, and the Philippines. Nicolas de Fer was one of the great map-producers of the 17th century. He became the protégé of Le Grand Dauphin, Louis de France, son of the great Louis XIV in 1689, and when the Duke of Anjou (grandson of Louis XIV) acceded to the throne of Spain, de Fer was proclaimed 'Geographer of the King Spain and of the Dauphin', or again 'Geographer of the Royal children'. De Fer, like the other map-editors encouraged Royal propaganda in his publications, with such headings as "This map that I distribute to the people displays the theatre of your victories." His shop's sign was in fact 'the Royal Globe' an emblem he was very proud of for the image of his armillary sphere can be found in the majority of his publications. While he enjoyed this official support, Nicolas de Fer produced Atlases as numerous as their content was important. His principal quality wa.…

hardcover. Zustand: fine. first edition.
