Includes sections on the nature of air, of the putrefaction of bodies & its effects, effects of temperament of air in the tropics, on the purification of air on ships, methods for keeping air on ships pure, remedies for 'evils', consideration of earthquakes, force of vapors and explosions within the earth, causes of earthquakes & lightning, etc. / Antonio Ribeiro Sanches, born in Penamacor, Portugal, to a Marrano family â" being the son of a Jewish father who had converted to Christianity â" become a physician, philosopher and encyclopaedist, studied "Arts, Law, Philosophy and probably Medicine" [Doria] at Coimbra (1716-1719) and took his medical degree at Salamanca (1724). As a physician in Lisbon he dealt with the yellow fever epidemic. Later, in 1726, he moved to London (to practice Judaism) and eventually found himself under the direction of Hermann Boerhaave at the University of Leiden. He also attended "the classes of the master, the lectures of Burmann, the chemistry lessons of Gaubius, the anatomy classes of Albino, the physic lessons of Gravesende and the pharmacology of Baron Van Swieten." [Doria] His success brought him an invitation to the Tsarina of Russia where he stayed from 1731-1747. From the age of 48 till his death he lived in Paris and built a considerable library. A major portion of that collection was donated to St Petersburg Imperial Academy of Sciences. He was a contributor to Diderot's Encyclopedie (published 1751-1772). / "Antonio Ribeiro Sanches was born in Portugal in 1699 and died in Paris in 1783. After his medical studies in Salamanca, he practiced for a short while in Portugal. From there, he fled from the Inquisition, never to return. He passed through Italy, England, and France, enrolling afterwards in the University of Leyden to study with Boerhaave. Through this master he was referred to the Russian tsarina to handle important medical functions. He stayed in Russia for more than 16 years, exiled afterwards to Paris, where he lived the last 36 years of his life. He wrote intensely and actively; he kept in contact with the European masters and influenced the cultural environment of his time. In medicine, he is remembered primarily by the studies he developed on venereal diseases (syphilis), and the exchange he established with Chinese medicine; by the reorganization of medical studies in Russia (Moscow and St Petersburg) and at the University of Strasburg. However his main contribution was his role in the reformation of the Portuguese University. In addition, his interests extended into cultural aspects such as the arts, social and commercial issues, politics and religion. Croissant de Garengeot, like his father, was a surgeon. / Among the surgeries and procedures covered: hernia, hydrocele, dropsy, paracentesis, gastrorrhaphy, lower abdomen, sutures, treatment of wounds, scars, "regeneration of flesh", Stones in the buttock, lithotomy, stones in the urethra, operation of phimosis, prognosis of paraphimosis, castration, removing fistula from the anus, cysts, tumors, cancers, bronchotomy, amputation of arms, cleft lip, polyps, operating in the skull, , aneurysm, tendons, infection, gangrene, amputation of the leg, flaps, cruciate ligaments, amputation of the fingers, etc. / 'surgeons rarely commented on the pain of castration although some recommended particular techniques to minimize the pain they inflicted. Heister maintained that castration should be performed with 'Circumspection and Tenderness', and that tying the spermatic vessels near the abdomen would cause less pain.109 Rene-Jacques Croissant de Garengeot advised that proper ligatures should be made in order to numb the area where the surgeon cut with surgical scissors (while separating the testicle from the scrotum). En el ingente trabajo desarrollado por el barón d'Holbach para ofrecer su filosofía basada en la razón y el operar de la naturaleza sin sujetarse a ninguna teología, un elemento esencial de su hermenéutica era liberarse de todo lo que pudiese oler a superstición. Estas Cartas a Eugenia son uno de los ejemplos más palmarios. Como señaló Ronald Schechter, en ellas, "una serie de cartas ficiticias dirigidas a una amiga que corría el riesgo de caer bajo el influjo de la superstición, Holbach escribió concisamente: 'El terror siempre ha sido y será el medio más seguro para engañar y subyugar a los hombres'(1). (.) 'Nuestros curas, como muchos médicos, comienzan por provocarnos la enfermedad con el terror que nos inculcan, solo para disfrutar del placer de consolarnos con las esperanzas que nos venden a un precio de oro'(2). Si el terror es una enfermedad, la filosofía sería su cura y, aunque Holbach sostenía que el terror había dominado a la humanidad desde tiempos inmemoriales, estaba convencido de que algún día la filosofía triunfaría. Al menos a nivel individual, el razonamiento sensato -que para Holbach significaba materialismo y ateismo- se sobrepondría a cualquier terror. Al escribir a Eugenia, que había quedado traumatizada con las historias sobre el infierno y los riesgos para su alma, Holbach insitía en que la filosofía era el remedio contra ese sufrimiento psicológico. THE FIRST PRINTED ATLAS OF RUSSIA, AND ONE OF PETER THE GREAT'S MOST SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENTS. First edition in German of De L'isle's Atlas russicus, or, in German "Russischer Atlas." In commissioning this great Atlas De L'isle Russia's greatest reforming Tzar, Peter the Great made a significant contribution to the modernization of his vast empire of Imperial Russia. The enlightened Tzar also invited De L'isle to found a school of Astronomy in St. Petersburg, and although Peter the Great died a year before De L'isle arrived in St. Petersburg in 1726, he was successful in achieving both of his Imperial commissions. Together with his partner Ivan Kirilov they founded the school of Astronomy and began the immense task of surveying the Russian Empire. Eventually the two men parted company and Kirilov decided to publish his own incomplete atlas of Russia in 1734, eleven years before Deslis French team finished its more comprehensive work. Delisle's atlas contained virtually every map of Russia issued by the Academy of Sciences and its institutional predecessor, Akademia Nauk, up to and including 1745. On his return to Paris in 1747, Delisle was able to construct his own observatory in the palace of Cluny, the same observatory later made famous by French astronomer Charles Messier. Ralph E. A later reduced format edition of Perrault's Memoires of 1671-1676, Perrault's study of this nature was first published in 1669 with the results of investigations of five animals and later expanded with studies of over forty animals. Prior to 1670, most descriptions of animals paid little attention to their internal structure, and there were very few images in natural history encyclopedias that depicted skeletons or muscles. That changed with the establishment of the Académie des Sciences in Paris in 1666 by Jean-Baptiste Colbert with the approval of King Louis XIV. The Academy functioned with neither statutes nor regulations until 1699. At that time, the Academy used the term mathématique to encompass the fields that are now called astronomy, mathematics and physics, and the term physique to encompass the fields that are now called anatomy, botany, zoology and chemistry. In January 1699, Louis reorganized the Academy, giving it first regulations. The effect was to give the King more control over their activities in exchange for becoming an official institution under his protection with the new name Académie Royale des Sciences. One of the original academicians, the physician Claude Perrault, organized regular sessions at which participants could dissect deceased animals from Louis XIV's royal menagerie and record all they observed. Lions, chameleons, bears, gazelles, wolves, ostriches, crocodiles, monkeys, eagles, tigers, porcupines and salamanders, among some, were all laid open by the academic's scalpels. These superb folding plates record in great detail the pioneering work at the Academy. These three volumes, in three parts, focus on the transformative and foundational years of the French Royal Academy of Sciences and Claude Perrault's efforts which had made comparative anatomy a vital tool for the classifying naturalist.
