L'importanza di queste prediche risiede anzitutto nell'evidente valore politico che, all'interno del dibattito sul rapporto tra i poteri temporale e spirituale, aveva assunto la figura del sovrano franco a cavaliere dei secoli XIII e XIV: se da un lato Luigi IX rappresentava un modello monarchico di riferimento su cui poter 'misurare' ogni sovrano cristiano, dall'altro, proprio in ragione della sua santità, contribuiva al rafforzamento dell'immagine della dinastia capetingia come beata stirps, istanza condivisa anche dalla linea cadetta di Sicilia (la dinastia angioina), alla quale Giacomo fu sempre molto legato negli anni del ministero episcopale partenopeo. A motivo del loro soggetto e del contesto in cui vennero pronunciati, i sermoni del maestro agostiniano sul santo re si rivelano testi di primario interesse anche al fine di una più precisa comprensione dell'ultima fase della produzione del Viterbese, in particolare della sua riflessione politica e dei suoi risvolti "pastorali".
