Hardback --- Summary In Late Antiquity, Ptolemy's treatise on cartography (second century AD) was yet to achieve the recognition that Ptolemy had hoped for, despite relatively wide distributio…n. However, in the early Middle Ages, knowledge of the Geographia did not disappear completely, owing mainly to treatises on astronomy translated from Arabic. The Latin version produced at the beginning of the 15th century did not, therefore, have the revolutionary character that is often attributed to it. The work that made it possible to understand the universe of Antiquity as it appeared in the classics was well received from the "literary" point of view. But the astrologists and scientists educated in universities were instrumental, in a way that has, until now, been little studied, in analysing the contradictions between the Ptolemy's representation of the universe and other representations that were still current and accepted. The long process of the modernisation of Ptolemy's vision entered a decisive phase at the beginning of the second half of the fifteenth century following the synthesis between humanism and natural philosophy. It continued until the beginning of the sixteenth century, considering the modes of representation (anachronistically called "projections"), retaining the concept of the influence of celestial bodies on the sublunar sphere, a feature of conceptions of the world held since Antiquity that the work of Ptolemy justified as best. The reception of the Geographia, envisaged over a long period, does not therefore confirm the opinion that it played a fundamental role in the supposed move towards a "modern" concept of the universe distinct from a "mediaeval" model. This book questions a certain number of commonplaces of cultural history. It is based on the first hand analysis of Greek and Roman texts and maps from highly diverse intellectual backgrounds. Dans l'Antiquité tardive, malgré une diffusion relativement importante, le manuel cartographique de Ptolémée (IIe s. après J.-C.) n'eut pas de postérité conforme au projet de son auteur. Dans le Moyen Age latin, en revanche, la connaissance de son contenu ne disparut jamais, grâce en particulier aux traités d'astronomie traduits de l'arabe. La version latine faite au début du XVe siècle n'eut donc pas le caractère révolutionnaire qu'on lui attribue souvent. La réception « philologique » d'une somme qui permettait de comprendre l'espace antique tel qu'il apparaissait dans les classiques fut importante. Mais les savants formés dans les universités, astrologue et médecins, jouèrent un rôle jusqu'à présent peu étudié dans l'analyse des contradictions entre l'image du monde ptoléméenne et d'autres types de représentations qui ne furent pas pour autant dépréciés et abandonnés. Le long processus de modernisation de Ptolémée entra dans une phase décisive à partir du troisième quart du XVe siècle grâce à la synthèse opérée entre programme humaniste et philosophie naturelle. Il se poursuivit dans le premier tiers du xvie siècle par la réflexion sur les modes de représentation (appelés « projections » de façon anachronique), sans qu'ait encore été abolie la dépendance du monde sublunaire à l'égard du monde céleste, caractéristique de la pensée de l'espace terrestre depuis l'Antiquité, que l'uvre de Ptolémée justifiait au mieux. La réception de la Géographie, envisagée sur une longue période, ne vérifie donc pas l'opinion selon laquelle elle aurait joué un rôle fondamental dans le passage supposé à une conception « moderne » distincte de la conception « médiévale » de l'espace. L'ouvrage, qui remet en question un certain nombre de lieux communs de l'histoire culturelle, est fondé sur l'analyse de première main des sources textuelles et cartographiques de la tradition grecque et latine émanant de milieux intellectuels très divers.

This book aims to contribute to this study by describing in detail the hundreds of diagrams and more elaborate maps found in medieval (mainly Latin) manuscripts up to around 1200. Most documents have been examined directly, some having been described from microfilm or electronic reproductions. Each document, far from being considered in isolation, is described in terms of its materiality (how the drawings were made, reprints and corrections, etc.), its codicological context (place of the drawing in the economy of the codex, rubrication, etc.) and its intellectual context (illustrated texts, place of the drawing on the page and in the codex as a whole). Taking these data into account will enable specialists to define precisely the reasons that contributed to the creation of these drawings. Each entry is accompanied by a reproduction of the map in large format to allow for comparisons and more in-depth study, making this book an indispensable resource for all related research. « Les mappae mundi existent dans un grand nombre de manuscrits, et beaucoup de travail doit être accompli avant que des généralisations certaines puissent être fondées sur elles », écrivait l historien anglais Denys Hay en 1957. Cet ouvrage entend contribuer à ce programme en décrivant dans le détail les centaines de diagrammes et de cartes plus développées que l on rencontre dans les manuscrits médiévaux (principalement latins) jusqu aux environs de 1200.
