Richly illustrated with colour plates. *** "After having followed Hoey's work for over a decade, 'The Phantom Sex' finally allows us to see the larger trajectory of the work, beyond the obvious thematic connections between the different bodies of work. Her unique narrative structures and the deeper questions on representation that the work poses come to the fore, showing Hoey's specific cultural and material engagement with the photographic medium itself." - Publisher. Hardcover. Zustand: Used - Very Good. Jewels buried in a grave, cigarettes smoked in $100 bills, champagne poured into a bathtub--these perverse, irrational acts are also somehow thrilling. Profane Waste explores the workings of an unacknowledged taboo: the taboo against willful dissipation. Dana Hoey, an acclaimed photographer appearing here in her first book, presents a series of 30 haunting images that are at once ultra-real and uncanny. Bestselling biographer and social critic Gretchen Rubin uses lucid analysis and explosive examples--the actions of Rauschenberg, Jesus, Ivan Boesky, Thoreau and Goebbels, among others--to demonstrate the power of the title concept. Together, Hoey's photographs and Rubin's provocative arguments create a shock of recognition: they lay bare intentions that stand outside the conventional goals of acquisition and accumulation. Book has minor shelf wear.

Paperback. SIGNED. First edition. Fine paperback. SHIPS THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY, WRAPPED IN PADDING AND CARDBOARD. The catalogue for an exhibition held at Lawrence Rubin Greenberg Van Doren Fine Art, NYC, March 23 - April 17, 1999. The group show presented "the photographs of twelve artists from around the world, all of whom employ a narrative documentary style, utilizing/playing the conventions of reportage, narrative documentary, story-telling, portraiture, forensic and snap-shot photography." The show was organized by Gregory Crewdson and Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn and included work by Julie Becker, Gabriel Brandt, Sarah Dobai, Jenny Gage, Katy Grannan, Dana Hoey, Jitka Hanzlova, Sarah Jones, Justine Kurland, Malerie Marder, Dayanita Singh, and Vibeke Tandberg. The catalogue also includes images by Anna Gaskall, Liza May Post, Annika von Hausswolff, and Rineke Dijkstra. The show created a lot of buzz at the time and has become a touchstone in the history of photography as so many of the then relatively-unknown female artists went on to create important work. The show also presented what became a new trend of "young female photographers whose staged pictures of adolescent girls emphasized crises of identity." This copy has been SIGNED BY KURLAND, MARDER, DIJKSTRA, GRANNAN, HOEY, JONES, & SINGH. Introduction by Rohatyn; short story by A.M. Homes, "Raft in Water (Floating)." 32 pages; 21 color and b&w illustrations, most full-page; 6.25 x 9.25 inches. Chronological biographies.
