Holt, a successful country doctor in the upstate village of Newport, New York, accepted the position of assistant surgeon in the 121st New York Volunteers in August 1862. At age 42 when he was commissioned, he was the oldest member of the staff. But his experience served him well, as his regiment participated in nearly all the major campaigns in the eastern theater of the war - Crampton's Gap before Antietam, Fredericksburg, Salem Church, the Mine Run campaign, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, the 1864 Shenandoah Valley campaign, and Appomattox. In A Surgeon's Civil War, the educated and articulate Holt describes camp life, army politics, and the medical difficulties that he and his colleagues experienced. His reminiscences and letters provide an insider's look at medicine as practiced on the battlefield and offer occasional glimpses of the efficacy of Surgeon General William A. Hammond's reforms as they affected Holt's regiment. He also comments on other subject, including slavery and national events. Holt served until October 17, 1864, when ill health forced him to resign." (publisher). …

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Fine in a Near Fine dust jacket. Stated First Edition / First Printing (1994, Kent State University Press). Part of the Voices of the Civil War series. Octavo (approx. 9.25 x 6.25 inches); xvi, 289 pp., [8] pp. unnumbered plates. Bound in publisher's original dark blue cloth over boards with spine lettered in bright silver foil. Illustrated with campaign maps, facsimile letters, and archival photographs reproducing portraits of Dr. Holt and officers of the 121st New York Volunteers. A solid, tight, and square copy with sharp corners, clean cloth, tight binding, and spotless interior pages. The original unclipped pictorial dust jacket—featuring a hand-tinted wartime portrait of Surgeon Holt—is vibrant and clean, exhibiting only faint handling softening along the spine perimeters and a minor surface indentation near the front spine fold, preserved in a clear archival mylar sleeve. Serving as assistant surgeon with the fabled 121st New York Volunteer Infantry ("Upton's Regulars" commanded by Colonel Emory Upton), Dr. Daniel M. Holt of Newport, New York, documented the brutal clinical and human realities of field medicine in the Army of the Potomac. Covering twenty-six months of continuous service from August 1862 through October 1864, Holt's articulate letters and personal diaries provide an unflinching eyewitness account of treating wounded soldiers under fire at Crampton's Gap, Fredericksburg, Salem Church, Gettysburg, the Bloody Angle at Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, and the Shenandoah Valley campaign. Unlike standard soldier narratives, Holt offers rare clinical observations on 19th-century triage, battlefield amputations, hospital gangrene, contagious epidemics, and the psychological trauma suffered by medical staff. An essential primary source for Civil War medicine, New York regimental history, and Army of the Potomac campaign collections.…
