Stapled booklet, 9 x 6" Response to article in World's Work by Admiral William Sims claiming Sinn Fein attacks against American sailors in Cork. Staples trifle rusty, outer sheet splitting, few small library rubberstamps, G.

On a piece of paper, 2 x 8 cm, cut from a letter. Neatly laid down on a piece of paper, 4 x 9 cm. Good, on aged paper. The signature reads 'Maurice OConnell'. In a contemporary hand, on the mount, 'Maurice O'Connell. MP. | (nephew of King Dan)'. According to the Oxford DNB, Daniel O'Connell ('The Liberator') was a cousin of Maurice's father Sir Maurice Charles Philip O'Connell (1768-1848).

See his entry in the Dictionary of Irish Biography. On 7 x 4 cm piece of paper. In good condition, with slight discoloration. In O'Connell's distinctive fine-nibbed hand reads: 'Ever yours, / most sincerely / Daniel O'Connell'. The 'C' of 'O'Connell' extends downwards, and this flourish is very slightly cropped beneath the usual a loop.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with discoloration from tape at head of second leaf. Watts's handwriting is not easily legible. The male recipient of the letter is not named. In reply to a letter received the previous Friday, Watts assures him that 'the earnest desire of Mrs. Watts and myself' is 'to promote by every means in our power the comfort and happiness of your daughter, and we are not without hope that we shall succeed in achieving what we wish.' Watts will be in London the following Thursday and Friday, 'and can, without the slightest inconvenience wait upon you in Trafalgar Square at any hour (morning or evening) that you may be the most likely to be disengaged'. He has 'promised to dine with the Royal Marines at Chatham on Saturday'. The letter ends with a discussion of the 'medium of conveyance' for certain 'articles of furniture', with Watts stating, 'I should wish Miss V. to bring any thing of the kind that she may desire to bring. There is not the shadow of an objection'. A line under the signature is illegible. Included with this item is a worn copy of the original engraved portrait of Watts (by Daniel Maclise), captioned 'The Editor of "The Literary Souvenir"', from Fraser's Magazine, June 1835.

The two letters are in fair condition, lightly aged and soiled. ONE: 'Friday' (docketed date June 1838). 2pp., 12mo. Applying for 'the Post of Guard to Any of the Roads', on behalf of 'James Poyntz of Tralee'. On the reverse Lichfield has written 'sorry cannot'. TWO: 'Friday' (docketed date 19 June 1840). 2pp., 12mo. 'Mr Maurice O'Connell presents his Compliments to Lord Lichfield and begs to recommend bearer John Keating for employment as a Letter Carrier - Mr M O'C will feel much obliged by Keating's appointment'. Docketed by Lichfield on reverse: 'a test - but negligible chance'.

Sullivan, Webb and Mangan all have entries in the Oxford DNB. The present item is referred to in a letter of 18 January 1890 (offered separately), where Webb explains that he is sending it to 'Miss Burgess' (of Norwich), with three other Irish nationalist autographs, describing it as 'unsigned but vouched by me'). 1p, 4to. In fair condition, lightly aged. Folded four times. Sullivan's text, covering almost the whole of the page and written with the skill of an editor, is an autograph draft, with corrections, of a newspaper appeal for subscriptions, headed 'Memorial to the Poet James Clarence Mangan.' Twenty-four lines. Webb vouches at the foot of the page: '[The Lord Mayor T. D. Sullivan MP October 1887] / Alfred Webb'. On the reverse of the leaf, in Miss Burgess's distinctive hand: 'Written by the Lord Mayor of Dublin J. D. Sullivan Oct/87'. Begins: 'Amongst some of the admirers of the genius of one of the sweetest singers of the Irish Race - the gifted James Clarence Mangan - the idea has been started of honouring his memory by affixing to the front of the house in which he was born a Memorial Tablet with a suitable inscription recording the dates of his birth and death, and bearing, if it be found feasible to produce it, a medallion likeness of the poet.' Among the three emendations is the alteration of the 'natives' of Dublin to 'inhabitants'. See partial image.
