L'auteur, Daniel Rabel (1578 v.1637) est un peintre qui s'est llustré dans divers genres. L'éclat et la luminosité des aquarelles originales ont étés parfaitement restitués dans ce superbe reueil, unique témoin d'un des plus anciens "florilèges" conservé à ce jour. in-4°.

Full Calf. Zustand: Good. 3rd Edition. Folio. 1633. 3rd (and last) edition of three issues 1622, 1627 and 1633. Engraved title page, frontispiece and 69 plates. Title page with very minor loss of engraved surface. Plate 69 with loss of corners not affecting engraved surface. Intermittent damp stain affecting top right hand corner of plates and margins of circa 12 early plates, otherwise clean and bright.Page edges red-speckled. Early full calf, very worn at corners and exposed front hinge, but structurally sound. Calf with surface etching loss associated with acid solution used for decorative speckling. Later (but not modern) replacement front paste-down and f.e.p. NISSEN 1575 and PRITZEL 10855. The second engraved florilegium to be published in France 'illustrating a variety of flowers, mostly bulbous species.the specimens have been elegantly arranged and presented on the page each one labelled with its latin name. The plates in Theatrum Florae are indeed magnificent and while the images clearly owe much to the earlier florilegium of Vallet and de Bry - (Jardin du Roy 1608), certain illustrations stand out due to their exceptional artistic quality and almost scientific realism' (Oak Spring Flora). Rabel also designed the title page and frontispiece, with their sophisticated allegorical imagery.the frontispiece, which presents the vista of an imposing formal garden seen through a green archway, forms a fitting 'entrance' to this florilegium.
