Appendix includes Darwin's funeral. And honors and awards. Many of the pages are uncut. The boards have been added and are dark red leather for the tips and spine with marble paper in the center. But the book is beginning to separate from the boards. Gilt at the top edge of the book. The seller also, is selling Vol 1 of Darwin's Lerrers.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Limited Edition. Two books of the fifteen-volume 'Author's Edition' of 'Darwin's Works.' #441 of 1,000 numbered copies. Boards show light overall wear; binding tight. Both inside covers have bookplates from Cornell University's Library of the Paleontological Research Institution; Vol. I has a library code as well, in ballpoint; neither volume has any further library markings. Vol. I's front endpaper bears the signature of Cornell professor Ruby Green Smith, a handful of pages in the middle are miscut along the leading edge (see photos), and a prior owner (Smith?) wrote penciled notes on the final two pages. Otherwise all pages in both volumes appear clean. Gilt top edge of text block. 4.6 pounds total. 558 and 562 pages.

[NONE] 1902. (hardcover) Very good. 348pp. 8vo. No edition stated. Frontispiece, with tissue guard, a fine portraiture. Green cloth, blind blocked, gilt title to spine. Light foxing and tanning to the endpapers and tissue guard and some scuffs, staining and marking to the boards, as may be anticipated. Pages remain remarkably clean and bright. Solid binding. No jacket, presumed as issued. Very good to near fine copy. Edited by his son, Francis Darwin, Fellow of Christ's College, Cambridge. With a portrait. Sixth thousand in this form.

Charles Darwin had collected material with a view to a new edition; following his death, Francis Darwin, his son, used this material, consisting of a mass of letters, extracts from and references to books, pamphlets and reviews, to revise and enlarge this second edition. Hb, bound in the original dark green cloth, blind rulings to upper and lower board, gilt titling to spine, dark olive green endpapers. Plates are tissue-guarded. Boards are in very good condition, just a little rubbing to the publishers name and gilt decoration at lower spine, and just very slightly rubbed at corners; front hinges are weak, but holding, inevitably having separated front endpapers along the spine, rear hinges are tight. Slight surface loss to front endpapers towards upper edge. Early pencil notes - 'latest edn with plates' and booksellers' prices on the pages preceding the title-page. Very occasional light foxing on early pages, pencil marginal lines in a couple of places. Generally a very good copy, with a nice original binding.

Cloth. Zustand: Very Good. 1st edition. 1st edition thus, 1887. A Very Good set of two volumes. 8vo., 558, 562 pp., bound in publishers decorated brown cloth with titles in gilt on spine. Tips, edges and top/base of spine lightly rubbed. Spines are tanned with gilt dulled. Text edges dusty. Text appears unmarked.

Soiling internally - occasionally severe. Pages31/32 re-attached with wear and tears to edges. A working copy. Postage will be at cost.

Tipped into book Volume I is a hand written note reading we believe ' With Francises Kindest Love and best wishes to ? and ? for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The Tree volumes have been professionally bebound using the original marbled board with new and highly decorated leather spines with maroon title panel and black volume Number panel. The Binders invoice is enclosed for £240.00 for the three volumes. A Fine set. The original boards slightly rubbed , the odd bit of foxing but contents generally clean. A lovely looking set.
