India's capacity to succeed in emerging and sustaining herself as a significant global player is, however, crucially dependent on the evolving dynamics within the spheres of its neighbourhood and India's capacity to make this rise acceptable and enthusiastic. In this connection, it is important to note that the concept of 'region' or 'neighbourhood' has been enhanced to bypass geographical divisions and now includes not only South Asia but also India's extended neighbourhood consisting of West Asia, Central Asia along with Southeast and East Asia. India's neighbourhood policy, launched under Prime Minister Narendra Modi since 2014, not only undertook a fresh initiative towards India's immediate neighbourhood in South Asia but also recalibrated itself and extended into other Asian regions. This was perhaps necessitated by the failure of the SAARC to ensure regionalism in any substantial manner but more importantly, this is an acceptance of the pre-colonial and colonial linkages that had evolved and thrived till the emergence of the post 1945 global order signified by the Cold War dynamics. Given the importance of India's neighbourhood policymaking within the context of India's global diplomacy, the recently established Kolkata based think tank Bandhan-HP Ghosh Centre deemed it fit to initiate a research project trying to cover key areas of India's neighbourhood policymaking. The present volume, titled India and the Neighbourhood: Case Studies and edited by Suranjan Das and Shantanu Chakrabarti, is an outcome of the first phase of research under this project and covers India's evolving relations with her South Asian neighbours; with Central Asian Republics (CARs); Afghanistan and Bhutan.…

Soft cover. Zustand: New. Netaji Institute for Asian Studies, an autonomous social science research institute sponsored by Government of West Bengal in its Higher Education Department, had initiated a project to publish in the form of Occasional Papers/Policy Briefs the outlines of India's relationship with East Asian countries in the context of India's earlier Look East and current Act East Policy. Two studies have already been published: the first in 2017 on India and Malaysia: Historical Hindsight and the Way Ahead by Suranjan Das (KW Publishers, 2017) and the second in 2018 on Indo-Vietnam Relations in the Emerging Global Order, jointly by Suranjan Das, Tridib Chakraborti and Subhadeep Bhattacharya. The present work represents the third publication in this series. This volume unfolds the trajectory of India-Indonesia bilateralism within a chronological framework. It delineates three crucial phases in this relationship: the 1945-55 era of friendship; the 1956-66 period of tensions; the post-1966 years of strategic companionship. It outlines how the bilateral engagement has gradually assumed an 'ASEAN-centric', 'Asia-centric' and 'global cooperative' strategic character. This transformed relationship has unfolded new opportunities which, if realised, can result in a more productive and constructive bilateralism between India and Indonesia. The book should hopefully be of use to both scholars of international relations as well as practitioners of diplomacy.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Dreadful diseases in colonial Bengal is the third volume produced under the aegis of the welcome trust (London) funded documentation project 'Western medicine and indigenous society: history of disease, medicine and public health policy in colonial Eastern India, (17571947)'. while the first volume documented the context in which hospitals were established in Calcutta during the rule of the British East India Company, and the second analysed the trauma caused by tuberculosis in the public health system of twentieth-century India, The present volume brings together selections from official reports on cholera, malaria and smallpoxthe three diseases which repeatedly struck colonial Bengal as epidemics. Its objective is to provide a useful resource for researchers, with ready entry points for reconstructing the incidence of these diseases, their mortality rates, social and economic effects as well as colonial medical interventions to contain them. The covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of studying epidemics that have struck human society in a historical continuum and the significance of the present collation needs to be viewed in this context. The book will be a welcome contribution to the rapidly developing field of history of medicine. …
