These sources give us fleeting glimpses of carting around Burgos and Salamanca,' an estimate that as many as 400,000 mules were regularly used in Spanish transport in the I540'S, an itinerary of I546 listing the routes most commonly used in the interior, including some which were "carriageable", and a sketch of the routes followed by the professional ox-carters of Castile.
