Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a compendium of precedents and clauses to assist legal practitioners with drafting marriage settlements. It comprises 39 precedents and 1 supplementary clause, the majority of which deal with personal estate and settlements on marriage, and includes examples relating to investments, powers to advance and maintain, trusts over personalty, and protection of a wife's separate estate. The author, Charles Davidson, was a leading conveyancer of the period, whose work was praised for its scholarly approach and clear exposition of the law. The precedents are taken from the 3rd edition of his work, originally published in 1856, though this edition incorporates the necessary amendments to reflect the provisions of the Statute of Frauds Amendment Act of 1860. It remains a collection of great historical interest, and a valuable resource for legal practitioners and scholars seeking to understand the development of conveyancing law in the mid-19th century. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

In den WarenkorbIn 1883 Queen Victoria appointed Davidson Dean of Windsor and her domestic chaplain. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. Both items in good condition, lightly aged; the letter folded for postage. Both addressed to 'My dear Jacob' and both signed 'Randall T Davidson'. ONE: Autograph Card Signed. Marked 'Private'. Eighteen lines of text, covering both sides. Begins: 'I talked the whole matter over so fully last night with Sir H. Ponsonby that I think I shd only do harm by now sending in your further letter received this morning.' Ponsonby 'is himself greatly disappointed at the obstacles which seem to stand across the path, and it will not be his fault if you have to receive a Princess instead of a Queen. But the Queen might regard a further letter now as undue pressure and it wd I fear be likely to defeat its own object.' Ponsonby has informed him that he intends to write to Jacob, 'though whether finally or not, I cannot tell.' Although he is 'much vexed & disappointed', he is afraid he can do no more. TWO: Letter in secretarial hand, with salutation and valediction in Davidson's autograph. He sees no objection to Jacob inserting in his parish magazine 'such a notice as you have sent me'.…

In den WarenkorbNone. Zustand: None. 23.5 × 15.5 cm (approximately 9¼ × 6⅛ inches). Publisher's green cloth, with the title and author's name lettered in gilt on the front cover. Corners of the binding bumped; library and withdrawal stamps of the Jewish Community Library and Bureau of Jewish Education, San Francisco. Otherwise very good condition. Author's presentation copy, inscribed in Yiddish to Barukh and Sarah Bibel, signed and dated San Francisco, April 8, 1937. The inscription translates: "A gift for my very esteemed friends Barukh and Sarah Bibel. San Francisco, April 8th, 1937." Text in Yiddish. A California collection of Yiddish poetry combining intimate lyrics with pointed treatments of poverty, labor, and social inequality during the Great Depression. Dedicated to the poet's parents, Moses David and Miriam, the poems address love, bereavement, religious doubt, and the natural world. In "Two Workers," a securely employed union member and an itinerant laborer regard one another with envy and suspicion, their shared dependence on selling their labor failing to overcome the divisions between them. "The Crisis Calls" confronts deprivation amid abundance and urges collective action, while "The Burning Bush" draws upon the biblical narrative of liberation. The recipient of the book was Baruch (Boris) Bibel (1890-1981), the San Francisco woodworker, Jewish cultural activist, and father of the artists Philip and Leon Bibel. The son of a rabbi from Chełm, Bibel received a religious education and, according to his granddaughter's account, rabbinical ordination, but chose woodworking as his profession. He became a lifelong student of Spinoza's philosophy. Before emigrating, Bibel helped foster secular Jewish cultural life in Szczebrzeszyn, Poland, advocating the establishment of a Jewish library and organizing young people around educational and Zionist activities. In his later autobiographical contribution to the town's memorial book, written from San Francisco, he recalled the resistance his proposal initially encountered and his part in laying the foundations for the town's Jewish library. Established in San Francisco before his family joined him in 1926, Bibel appears in the 1933 city directory as a cabinetmaker at 637 Central Avenue. This presentation copy is an important record of the still under-researched Yiddish cultural life of San Francisco in the 1930s. Worlcat shows copies at UC Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA, California State Library, YIVO, National Yiddish Book Center and National Library of Israel.…
