None. Zustand: None. 23.5 × 15.5 cm (approximately 9¼ × 6⅛ inches). Publisher's green cloth, with the title and author's name lettered in gilt on the front cover. Corners of the binding bumped; library and withdrawal stamps of the Jewish Community Library and Bureau of Jewish Education, San Francisco. Otherwise very good condition.  Author's presentation copy, inscribed in Yiddish to Barukh and Sarah Bibel, signed and dated San Francisco, April 8, 1937. The inscription translates: "A gift for my very esteemed friends Barukh and Sarah Bibel. San Francisco, April 8th, 1937." Text in Yiddish.  A California collection of Yiddish poetry combining intimate lyrics with pointed treatments of poverty, labor, and social inequality during the Great Depression. Dedicated to the poet's parents, Moses David and Miriam, the poems address love, bereavement, religious doubt, and the natural world. In "Two Workers," a securely employed union member and an itinerant laborer regard one another with envy and suspicion, their shared dependence on selling their labor failing to overcome the divisions between them. "The Crisis Calls" confronts deprivation amid abundance and urges collective action, while "The Burning Bush" draws upon the biblical narrative of liberation.  The recipient of the book was Baruch (Boris) Bibel (1890-1981), the San Francisco woodworker, Jewish cultural activist, and father of the artists Philip and Leon Bibel. The son of a rabbi from Chełm, Bibel received a religious education and, according to his granddaughter's account, rabbinical ordination, but chose woodworking as his profession. He became a lifelong student of Spinoza's philosophy. Before emigrating, Bibel helped foster secular Jewish cultural life in Szczebrzeszyn, Poland, advocating the establishment of a Jewish library and organizing young people around educational and Zionist activities. In his later autobiographical contribution to the town's memorial book, written from San Francisco, he recalled the resistance his proposal initially encountered and his part in laying the foundations for the town's Jewish library. Established in San Francisco before his family joined him in 1926, Bibel appears in the 1933 city directory as a cabinetmaker at 637 Central Avenue.  This presentation copy is an important record of the still under-researched Yiddish cultural life of San Francisco in the 1930s. Worlcat shows copies at UC Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA, California State Library, YIVO, National Yiddish Book Center and National Library of Israel.…
