The narrative begins with the early "discovery and land claims" of the island, telling how members of the Bartlett familydescendants of Christopher Bartlettlaid the foundations of this unique community in the late 18th century, staking claims and yet quickly establishing rural town governance. The arrival of the Bartletts set the stage for generations of islanders who fished for porgies and mackerel, farmed with thanks to "deep loam, " and carved out a unique coastal life in the shadow of Mount Desert. Throughout the 19th century, Bartlett's Island was a "fair and happy land, " with local captains at the helm of commerce and a robust schooling system shaping the minds of island youth. Chapters recount not only the steady rhythms of farm and sea but also the textures of family lifedetailing diet, medicine, winter hardships, and the disputes that sometimes flared within a close-knit community. By the 1880s, Bartlett's Island earned the moniker "Forgotten Americans, " as life became both isolated and distinctive, marked by communication challenges and the perseverance of its people. The transformation of Bartlett's Island in the late 19th and early 20th centuries is captured in "The Second Discovery, " when families such as the Lorings and the Lords acquired land and remade the island into a summer haven for the wealthy. The book follows these transitions, mapping changes from a working-class enclave to a retreat for seasonal residentsa cycle completed with the eventual incorporation of Bartlett's Island. Through genealogical records, gravestone inscriptions, and vignettes of everyday life, Binnewies and Davisson bring to life the personalities and dramas of Bartlett's Island's historyoffering a rare glimpse into a world now largely faded, yet preserved in memory and meticulous documentation. The book *A History of Bartlett's Island, Mount Desert, Maine* is richly supplemented with a variety of maps, illustrations, and tables that collectively bring the island's history to life. The maps trace the region's transformation from Penobscot Bay in 1607 and Mount Desert in the 1770s, through a sequence of Bartlett's Island property ownership charts spanning 1792, 1850, 1880, and 1910. They include notable features like mining locations, steamboat routes in 1887, and the Lotting Plan of Bartlett's Island, as well as depictions of farms such as the Loring Farm. Visual illustrations enrich the text with images of significant people and places from Bartlett's history, such as Captain H. C. Raymond, Captain David Bartlett, and Wesley Bartlett. There are evocative period sceneslike the Bartlett's Island schoolhouses from different eras, family gatherings on porches in the 1880s, and everyday life including handicrafts and Loring Farm activities. Key family homes are pictured, such as that of Captain Christopher Bartlett, and there are scenes covering pulpwood operations, the Phillips Lord Farm in the 1940s, and even a reunion picnic on Bartlett's Island in 1974. The tables in the book provide a quantitative backbone to the narrative, with inventories of the estates of Christopher and David Bartlett (from 1806 and 1871, respectively) , an agricultural census from 1880, and a record of the island's valuation and taxes in 1889.
