Por muy diversas razones, que no procede detallar ahora, cabe, desde luego, nuestro protagonista, que, aunque apenas ha trabajado sobre nuestro XIX, recordará sin duda la veneración de nuestro común maestro, Francisco Tomás y Valiente, por la obra de don Benito y aquella afirmación suya, que tantas veces le escuchamos, de que no se podía ser un buen historiador de dicho periodo sin haber leído la copiosísima y apasionante literatura de aquel insigne escritor tan denostado, por cierto, por los sectores más oscurantistas de la sociedad que le tocó vivir. Quienes firmamos estas líneas, en tanto que coordinadores de este volumen de estudios en merecidísimo homenaje a Salustiano de Dios, le tratamos desde hace mucho tiempo (el uno desde el comienzo de la licenciatura, allá por 1968, la otra al iniciar la preparación de la tesis doctoral, en 1992) y, tras tantos años de convivencia casi diaria en la Facultad de Derecho salmanticense, le conocemos en profundidad, con sus luces y sus sombras, como él sabe de las nuestras. Estamos, pues, en perfectas condiciones de destacar los rasgos sobresalientes de su nada simple personalidad procurando, desde luego, por pudor civil no ceder demasiado a los afectos. Es ante todo un hombre bueno, y también tímido y de rica vida interior, defensor acérrimo de sus convicciones (tal vez con excesiva reiteración en sus argumentos). En política, sin ser nunca militante, se opuso, como tantos españoles de su generación (no todos, ni mucho menos) a la dictadura franquista, régimen inicuo y arrasador de la cultura de derechos, y así queremos ahora reconocérselo, y mucho más en los tiempos difíciles que corren en que estas actitudes son consideradas por algunos, en el mejor de los casos, como fruslerías sin importancia. Por lo demás, nuestro homenajeado ha sido, y continúa siéndolo, un hombre honrado e incapaz de maldad así como un buen ciudadano, aspectos fundamentales en toda sociedad democrática. En cuanto a su biografía universitaria, de la que nos ocupamos con algún detalle en otro lugar de estas páginas, tiene nuestro amigo a sus espaldas una larga trayectoria de académico serio y esforzado. Recibió la herencia valentiniana de la orientación social de la historia jurídica y en ella ha permanecido siempre, preocupado por profundizar en la función del derecho en las sociedades del pasado, tanto cuando ha estudiado magistralmente las instituciones centrales de la monarquía castellana en la Modernidad como cuando lo ha hecho con los juristas de esa misma corona en aquellos tiempos. Si acaso con la añadidura del materialismo: recordamos ahora a vuelapluma su empleo de libros de Federico Engels o Vere Gordon Childe cuando explicaba los derechos (tan cuestionables, por cierto) de los pueblos prerromanos de la Península, el exhaustivo manejo de la obra de Boris Porschnev cuando se enfrentó al absolutismo, o la devoción (siempre mantenida) hacia Pierre Vilar o hacia el primer Clavero. Aunque coartado por su arraigada sobriedad, ha sido un profesor sabio y entregado a su labor, riguroso y al mismo tiempo sumamente comprensivo con los alumnos. Lo atestigua el mayor de los abajo firmantes que compartió con él durante más de veinte años el mismo grupo docente. Y que soportó a su lado, silla junto a silla, convocatoria tras convocatoria, las largas jornadas de exámenes orales (otra herencia valentiniana) en las que pudo comprobar que exigencia, humanitarismo y paciencia eran para él actitudes perfectamente conciliables. Como investigador que sigue siendo, y a reserva de las precisiones que haremos de inmediato, armado con su bagaje de abundantes lecturas historiográficas, es profundo e infatigable en el manejo de libros y documentos de archivo: tras dejar años de juventud en Simancas, ¡cuántas veces ha visto anochecer en la biblioteca histórica de nuestra Universidad, cara, o espalda, a las cresterías de la catedral nueva, oyendo pasar las horas en los relojes de las torres próximas! Cerramos ya estos párrafos que pretenden ser mucho más que una mera y fría presentación agradeciendo muy encarecidamente a los colegas y amigos que aquí escriben sus colaboraciones, en las que han volcado el rigor científico que les caracteriza unido al reconocimiento y afecto a nuestro homenajeado, como también queremos agradecer muy sinceramente el generoso patrocinio de la Fundación Salamanca Ciudad de Cultura y Saberes y el buen hacer del Director de Ediciones de la Universidad de Salamanca, Eduardo Azofra, y del Secretario Técnico, Antonio Sánchez Sacristán, sin dejar de señalar que este libro ha podido hacerse realidad gracias también a la concesión de la ayuda de apoyo a la investigación que en su día hiciera el Vicerrectorado de Investigación salmantino a la profesora Eugenia Torijano. El profesor Salustiano de Dios, nuestro "Salus", se lo merece sin el menor género de dudas. Y lo hacemos acudiendo de nuevo a Cernuda que en 1936, cuando comenzaba la guerra civil, escribió el poema que arranca con el "Recuérdalo tú y recuérdalo a otros" con el que Ronald Fraser tituló su imprescindible libro sobre aquel terrible acontecimiento. Eso queremos nosotros, por fortuna sin dramatismo alguno, para la persona y la obra de "Salus", tan querido, para quien pedimos a los dioses, o si se prefiere al destino, o a las estrellas, larga y fructífera vida.
