Hardcover. Corcos, Lucille (illustrator). 405, [1] p. Includes illustrations. Musical scores. Some illustrations in color. This is a large, heavy book for if shipped internationally extra shipping fee will be requested. Joseph Deems Taylor (December 22, 1885 - July 3, 1966) was an American music critic, composer, and promoter of classical music. Nat Benchley, co-editor of The Lost Algonquin Roundtable, referred to him as "the dean of American music." In 1919, Taylor gave a series of lectures on music history in Denver, Colorado. In 1921 Taylor secured a job as music critic for the New York World, a post he held when approached by the Metropolitan Opera to suggest a composer to write a new opera. He put forth his own name, and was accepted, the result being The King's Henchman, with the libretto by Edna St. Vincent Millay. Peter Ibbetson followed in 1929. The Philadelphia Opera Company performed the world premiere of his third opera Ramuntcho. Taylor also worked extensively in broadcasting, and as intermission commentator for the New York Philharmonic. He appeared in Walt Disney's 1940 film Fantasia as the film's Master of Ceremonies. Taylor's work as a broadcaster, critic, and commentator ultimately overshadowed his work as a composer. Taylor was the third president of ASCAP, and held the post for six years. The ASCAP Deems Taylor Awards were established in 1967 to honor his memory. Arrangements by Dr. Albert Sirmay. The piano arrangements contained in this volumes were completely new, and derived exclusively from the original piano scores, published in London, during the composer's lifetime. In addition, Dr. Sirmay listened to the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company recordings, considered the most dependable custodian of the Gilbert-Sullivan tradition. For every operetta, there is a drawing by Miss Corcos. The one hundred and two songs were drawn from the two hundred odd songs and choruses of the Gilbert and Sullivan repertory and are in the opinion of the editor, the cream of the collection. Fair. No dust jacket. Front and rear boards weak and have been strengthened with glue. Cover has wear and soiling. Spine torn at top. Edges rubbed and worn. Presumed first edition/first printing thus.
